Tax everybody lah. More or less only lah…

This is why some sinkies rather spend their $$$ overseas for holiday than spending in Sg.

These taxes are "optional " no need to pay if you are not driving

If something optional it cannot be called a tax but a fee....

If yoh rent badminton court from the CC, you pay a fee. Nobody calls it a tax because you can opt not to play.

I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

When our leaders claim that S'poreans pay relatively low direct taxes compared to other developed countries, they conveniently failed to mention that we pay a wide variety of indirect taxes.

Why Singapore Govt don't allowed Singaporeans to be ranked world's No.1 car owners?

Or ranked Singaporeans No.1 highest car ownership in the World

Today, those who pay S$100,000 for COE, they must be idiots.

Simply paying 10 years advanced taxes.

S$100,000 in today's money @ 7.2% interest compounded over 10 years' periods is equivalent to S$200,000

It is a matter of whether you want the enjoyment of driving a car of your own or prefer a fatter bank account. Again it is a choice in a diplomatic system.

Y after so many years in operation, pple still cannot understand y we r having this COE system in Singapore.

Trading Economics:  In China, employed persons refer to who performed some work for one hour during the reference period.

You seem to forget that higher COE premiums affect both car owners and those who do not even have a car. This is  because the cost of doing business will shoot up significantly since all businesses rely on transportation. When businesses increase the prices of their goods and services, the overall cost of living will rise, causing a ripple effect on the economy and affecting everybody in S'pore.

This is the reason why only 11% of S'poreans are able to own a car. Most car owners have enough left over after spending on their car to pay the mortgage on their private residence, take vacations overseas, eat out, raise a family and save for the future. However, the number of such people is getting smaller.

Like it or not , someone need to pay more.
for low income and those not driving, they may be happy with that.
Sg is small place with MRT and cab, not necessary for most to have car.
Anyway these days many reckless drivers, getting unsafe.

Beside adding to the higher costs of goods and services, COE is part of the components causing high costs of living。

But Singapore leaders choose to ignore COE in any costs of living debates and discussions.

"Car ownership in Singapore
Singapore has one of the lowest car ownership rates, among advanced economies, worldwide. In 2022, there were only 149 cars per thousand inhabitants here, a rate less than half that of the UAE or Taiwan, a quarter that of the United Kingdom and Switzerland, and six times less than New Zealand and the United States."

"COE prices hit a new high in October, following repeated new records set in prior months. The open category now changes hands at $152,000, more than five times the recommended retail price of a brand-new Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla sold elsewhere.

This is one of the major drivers of ever-rising pressure on our nation’s cost of living, and COEs were implicated in the most recent increase in headline inflation.""

COE is like a tariff on all cars and tariff is inflationary especially if imposed on essential goods.

Also true for the high tax on cigarettes and alcohol.

While COE added to raising prices of goods and services which is inflationary thru higher cost of living.

It's carried across by each and every Singaporean

There are still many clueless people like my 60-year-old colleague who keeps telling car owners at work that he wishes for the COE to rise to $200,000 - $300,000 since he does not own a car.
