The nearly three-year war has seen a sharp escalation in recent days, with both sides deploying new weapons in a bid to gain the upper hand before United States President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. We do not rule out the use of Oreshnik against the military, military-industrial or decision-making centres, including in Kyiv," Putin told a press conference in the Kazakh capital Astana, referring to the hypersonic missile.
Kyiv's govt district - an area of the capital where multiple government buildings are located - is protected with intense security, but fears for it have risen over the last week. Russia tested its new Oreshnik ballistic missile on Ukraine last week, and Putin boasted on Thursday that firing several of the weapons at once would have the equivalent force of a nuclear strike, or a "meteorite" hit.
Kremlin chief said overnight barrage was a "response to continued attacks on their territory by (US) ATACMS missiles". "As I have said repeatedly, we'll always be a response from our side."

The Russian leader spoke hours after the overnight barrage that left more than half a million in Ukraine's western Lviv region cut off from electricity. Another 280,000 in the western Rivne region and 215,000 in the northwestern Volyn region also lost power, officials said. Ukraine's emergency services said the Russian overnight strikes inflicted damage in 14 regions across the country, with the nation's west hard-hit.
Zelenskyy said that Russia had also fired "cluster munitions" during the attack, calling it a "very despicable escalation of Russian terrorist tactics".
US President Joe Biden on Thursday said the attack showed the "urgency" of backing Kyiv ahead of Trump's return to office in January.
"This attack is outrageous and serves as yet another reminder of the urgency and importance of supporting the Ukrainian people in their defence against Russian aggression," Biden said in a statement.
AFP journalists in the capital heard blasts ring out overnight as air defence systems targeted Russian drones and missiles, with locals crowding into the underground metro system for cover.

Ukrainian Ministry of Defense acquired more than 2,000 heavy bomber drones through channels last year,” technology journalist David Hambling writes, noting that the entire fleet costs approximately half the price of a single F-16 fighter jet, with each drone valued at around $20,000. These unmanned aircraft, which include varieties such as Vampire, R18, Nemesis, & Kazhan (Bat), carry substantial payloads of 20-40 pounds can strike targets up to 12 miles away.
“They are frequently targeted: the Russians will attempt to locate their position by their radio emissions, or will follow the drone back to them with a quadcopter,” Hambling writes, highlighting the dangerous conditions under which Ukrainian drone teams operate.
OSINT analyst: “Ukraine has pivoted to using heavy bomber drones to destroy vehicles, and posts tremendous numbers of losses per day using this method,” Perpetua notes on X. The impact of these drones has been so significant that Russian forces have begun repurposing captured Ukrainian drones for their own use. They are even “creating a supply chain to keep their trophy bombers in service,” according to OSINT analyst Roy.
The psychological impact on Russian forces is also notable. According to Hambling’s reporting, Russian soldiers can claim 10 days’ vacation for downing one of these drones, and folklore has emerged about the Baba Yagas “swooping down at night to carry away wounded Russian soldiers in their metal claws.”

While full extent of damage inflicted by these night bombers may not be known until after the war, Hambling’s report suggests they represent a significant advancement in Ukraine’s drone warfare capabilities and a crucial element of their military strategy.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said Wednesday he would impose high tariffs on Russia if President Vladimir Putin does not bring a stop to the "ridiculous" war in Ukraine.
"Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE," Trump said in a post to Truth Social. "If we don’t make a 'deal,' and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries."
This Trump is so weak on Putin, who is O and ok for him to go again to, to do his killing on Ukraine folks for more greedy for land.

As Trump vows to end war, Ukraine’s deep strikes weaken Russia. Ukraine is striking Russian oil refineries and war production with increasing success. As US President Donald Trump launched a 100-day effort to end the war in Ukraine, Kyiv’s long-range weapons were devastating the heart of Russia’s war effort – its oil depots, weapons storages and factories.
Trump took the oath of office on Monday, saying success would be measured “not just by the battles that we win, but also by the wars that we end and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into”. That was a reference to his oft-stated belief that the administration of his predecessor, former US President Joe Biden, erred in allowing the Ukraine war to begin, and his vow to end it quickly.

President Volodymyr Zelensky on Jan. 22 clarified his earlier comments on the number of European peacekeepers needed to maintain peace in Ukraine, saying the required numbers would depend on the size of Ukraine’s own military.
The statement comes after Zelensky told a journalist at the World Economic Forum in Davos that at least 200,000 European soldiers would be needed for a stable peace deal.
"By the way, I didn’t say we need 200,000 (peacekeepers)... A journalist asked me, I said, 'maybe more, maybe less,'" Zelensky said when asked about the statement in an interview with Bloomberg TV.
Zelensky spoke in comparably stronger terms in Davos, saying: "From all the Europeans? 200,000, it’s a minimum. It’s a minimum, otherwise it’s nothing."
The president explained in the interview that the size of the needed contingent will depend on the strength of the Ukrainian military. As Kyiv would struggle to maintain a million-strong army needed to repel a future Russian aggression, fielding such a force would depend on U.S. and European support, he explained.
If the U.S. and Europe prove unwilling to help maintain such an army and Ukraine reduces it "by 200,000, 300,000 or 500,000, it means that other troops have to replace them in those numbers," Zelensky added.
The president’s conclusion was that in the face of such options, Ukraine’s accession to NATO is the cheapest way toward stable peace both for Ukraine and the West. At the same time, Zelensky admitted that some members – namely the U.S., Germany, Slovakia, and Hungary – remain reluctant to allow Ukraine into the alliance.
Zelensky has been in contact with a number of European leaders about the prospects of a peacekeeping mission — an initiative that French President Emmanuel Macron has spearheaded. During a visit to Kyiv on Jan. 16, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that his country will play its "full part" in supporting efforts to maintain an enduring peace in Ukraine.
The idea has also found support from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has called upon Europe to take up greater responsibility for Ukraine’s security and pledged to bring a swift end to the war.

"I understand that contacts can be in different formats," Zelenskyy said, referring to possible negotiations that would lead to "a just peace".
"I think we should focus on this today," he said.
President Vladimir Putin earlier this week said he was ready for talks with US counterpart Donald Trump on Ukraine, praising him as a "smart" leader who might have prevented the conflict from starting in February 2022.
Putin did not say when talks could take place, and the Kremlin said earlier it was still waiting for "signals" from Washington, despite Trump announcing Thursday he was willing to meet Putin "immediately".
Trump, who was inaugurated on Monday, has called the conflict "ridiculous" and threatened Russia with tougher economic sanctions if it does not agree to stop its offensive.

Soldiers of Ukraine’s 225th Assault Battalion ambushed Russian units in Kursk Oblast using HIMARS, a tactic that may explain significant Russian losses, Forbes analyst David Axe reported on Jan. 23. Axe writes that Ukrainian troops pretended to retreat after a defeat, drawing the Russians into a wooded area near the village of Sverdlikove. Once the Russian forces moved in, they were struck by HIMARS.
“As a result of the strike, a significant portion of enemy personnel was eliminated, and our groups returned to complete the clearance of the area,” the 225th Assault Battalion reported on Jan. 23.
Axe noted that the ambush was made possible by precise coordination between the battalion’s headquarters, forward companies, and an adjacent artillery brigade. This operation highlights the reasons for the heavy losses suffered by Russian and North Korean forces.
Russian and North Korean troops, Axe explained, continue to attack daily along the same routes toward the city of Sudzha, a key Ukrainian defensive position. Increasingly, these forces advance on foot with inadequate support, making them especially vulnerable to artillery strikes, particularly when their movements are funneled into pre-designated kill zones.
The exact number of Russian casualties in this op remains unknown. Large Russian attacks typically involve up to 50 vehicles & several hundred soldiers, though most op use smaller forces. In recent weeks, most disastrous assaults by Russian & North Korean units have resulted in hundreds of dead and wounded. Axe points out pride expressed by 225th Battalion over ambush suggests potentially massive Russian casualties.”
On Jan. 9, 2025, @Ramstein Air Base in Germany, President Zelenskyy stated that North Korean troop losses had already reached 4,000, while Russian losses had climbed to 30,000.

As Ukraine tries to hold onto Donetsk Oblast strongholds, Ukrainian soldiers and Western experts are raising concerns about the cost of last-ditch withdrawals. Thrusting forward with their vast manpower advantage, Of course military situation around Velyka Novosilka. But maybe the Finish Blackbird Group doesn't either. After all - op security is one of the strong suits of the AFU, what if Ukrainian general staff has deliberately lured the Russians to overexpose themselves in the area? What if strategic reserves - of if they do or don't exist can or can't be deployed - are being brought in right now to give Russians a bloody nose in a target rich environment of their own making? It wouldn't be the first time Armed Forces of Ukraine have turned the tables on their enemy. Only time will tell...
Russian troops are gradually penetrating Ukrainian defenses on the western edge of Donetsk Oblast and are close to capturing Velyka Novosilka. Loc: about 15km east of neighboring Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, the vital road-junction village was once home to around 5,000 people. It is now facing a similar fate to other Donbas strongholds, where Ukraine's delayed withdrawals resulted in avoidable casualties, military experts said. They,
Russian troops appear to have cut into center of Velyka Novosilka, likely dividing town into two & trapping Ukrainian troops in south, according to Pasi Paroinen at Finland-based open-source intelligence organization Black Bird Group. Paroinen said on Jan. 25 southern pocket appears to have just fallen, w/Ukrainians likely holding onto Velyka Novosilka’s northwestern areas & Russia expected to complete the capture in “days.”Russian Defense claimed on Jan. 24 its troops had planted a Russian flag in ctr of Velyka Novosilka that they had split town into two, cutting off Ukrainian forces.
It is unclear how many Ukrainian troops were trapped inside the southern pocket in Velyka Novosilka, but it could be around two or three battalions, Paroinen said. He added that, given the dire manpower situation in Ukraine, these battalions were likely depleted, with only a few hundred troops remaining in total. The question is if it's closer to a thousand or closer to a few hundred, & considering how bad manpower situation is, probably going to be closer to several hundred,” Paroinen told the Kyiv Independent, adding that it is “purely a rough estimate” due to the lack of official info.
