Slovakia likely to hand over MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine

BERLIN - Britain has offered Germany a swap of cruise missiles that could allow German govt a way to overcome concerns over a suggested delivery of missiles to Ukraine, Germen newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Wednesday.

Kyiv has been pushing Berlin to supply its Taurus missiles, which could give Ukraine ability to cause significant damage deeper within Russian-occupied territory, but German govt has remained hesitant out of concern that could trigger an international escalation of the conflict.

The paper cited govt and diplomatic sources as saying that British govt has proposed to Berlin several wks ago, it could export Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine and, in turn, receive the German Taurus missiles.
The office of German chancellor Olaf Scholz has been analysing this proposal, the report added.
The German govt declined to comment.

A person familiar with negotiations said proposed swap could potentially find support in Berlin. German govt has repeatedly said it will only act in concert with Washington on arms deliveries to Ukraine

Kyiv says it will 'firmly respond' if Moscow attempts to involve Transnistria in war.

As cadets march along 25 Oct 2023 in Street on Republic Day in Tiraspol, the capital of breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria. Kyiv says "firmly respond" to any attempts to involve the Russian-controlled Moldovan region of Transnistria in Russia's war against Ukraine.

If Russia / Putin destabilize the situation in Moldova, the Ukraine Foreign Ministry said amid increased Russian pressure on the Eastern European country. Transnistria is internationally recognized 100% of Moldova. In Zaporizhzhia direction, Ukrainian troops brought a group of FPV strike drones into the hangars with hidden invaders’ equipment and destroyed it.

Wild Hornets, developers of drones, released video, of their drone raid as soldiers of the Bulava strike unit of Presidential Brigade “Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi” destroyed vehicles, two tanks, BMPs, and the ARV of the enemy. According to the servicemen, the Russian secretly pulled military equipment to carry out offensive, but an unexpected strike thwarted these plans. One can see drones penetrate the building 1-by- to find their target!, after they successfully hit it. Presumably, all equipment burned down & drone hits by large-scale fire.

In their message, drone operators drew special attention to the fact that they used FPV drones of the Wild Hornets worth UAH 200 thousand to destroy all equipment, which is slightly more than $million.

Following equipment can be identified in the video:
2 tanks (presumably T-72 and T-80),
BREM-1 armored recovery vehicle,
BMP-3,
2 Ural trucks, and those other inside... Rotfl
A truck with an S-60 artillery mount.

The location where Russia invader equipment destroyed was geolocated. These are hangars (here) on outskirts of village of Staromlynivka, located 5-6 kilometers from front line in the Zaporizhzhia region. Tongue Clapping

Vladimir Putin has given his annual state of the nation address, two weeks before Russia's 2024 presidential election

Putin warned that any deployment of Western troops in Ukraine would have "tragic" consequences

He claimed Western rhetoric threatened a "conflict with the use of nuclear arms and consequently the destruction of civilisation"

The comments appear to respond to French President Macron, who earlier this week did not rule out sending Western soldiers to Ukraine

Putin also said the Russian military had the "initiative" in the two-year, full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and was advancing in a number of areas

Ukrainian troops recently withdrew from the eastern town of Avdiivka - but overall, the frontlines have been largely unchanged for months.

Ukrainian claim they’ve shoot down 11 Russian planes in 11 days: 11 claimed losses are worse than they might seem for the increasingly stressed Russian air force.

Shooting Down 11 Jets In 11 Days, Ukraine Nudges The Russian Air Force Closer To Organizational Death-Spiral

Feb 29, 2024,03:
The Russian air force lost another Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bomber on Thursday, Ukrainian air force claimed. If confirmed, the Thursday shoot-down would extend an unprecedented hot streak for Ukrainian air-defenses.

The Ukrainian claim they’ve shoot down 11 Russian planes in 11 days: seven Su-34s, two Sukhoi Su-35 fighters and two rare Beriev A-50 radar planes.

But those 11 claimed losses are worse than they might seem for the increasingly stressed Russian air force. In theory, the air arm has plenty more planes. In practice.

Exactly how the Ukrainians are shooting down so many jets is unclear. It’s possible the Ukrainian air force has assigned some of its American-made Patriot missile launchers to mobile air-defense groups that move quickly in close proximity to the 600-mile front line of Russia’s two-year wider war on Ukraine, ambushing Russian jets with 90-mile-range PAC-2 missiles then swiftly relocating to avoid counterattack.

Distance Ukrainians shot down A-50 Friday—120 miles or so—hints a longer-range missile system was involved. Perhaps a Cold War-vintage S-200 Ukrainian airforce pulled out of long-term storage.
It also is apparent Ukrainians have moved some of their two-dozen or so 25-mile-range NASAMS surface-to-air missile batteries closer to front line. After all, Russians found—and destroyed with a missile—their first NASAMS launcher near the southern city of Zaporizhzhia on or before Monday.

It’s possible Russian forces’ own actions have contributed to spike in aviation losses. After finally defeating, at incredible cost in people & equipment, the ammo-starved Ukrainian garrison in the ruins of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine two weeks ago, Russian army in Ukraine is advancing against other Ukrainian garrisons also are running out of ammo—all thanks to Russia-aligned Republicans in U.S. Congress, who been blocking U.S. aid to Ukraine since Oct-2023.

Sensing an opportunity, the Russian air force is flying more sorties, closer to the front line, lobbing glide-bombs to suppress Ukrainian troops.

Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies explained, “although this results in loss of aircraft, their ground forces gain a significant firepower advantage.” This surge in Russian sorties presents Ukrainian air-defenders more targets. So of course they’re shooting down more Russian planes.

It helps Ukrainian effort that Russian pilots increasingly are blind to Ukrainian missile-launches. The Russian air force once counted on its nine or so active A-50 radar planes—organized into three, three-plane “orbits” in the south, east and north—to extend sensor coverage across Ukraine. In damaging one A-50 in a drone strike last year and shooting down two more A-50s this year, the Ukrainians have eliminated a third of this sensor coverage, and created blind spots where Russian pilots might struggle to spot approaching missiles.

Ukrainian pilots conduct strike mission training on F-16s.

Pilots are practising tactical manoeuvres against both on air and ground targets. This is very, very necessary, because not only do they need to fly and control the airspace, they have to engage in combat. Our pilots are currently honing these skills.

Similarly, aircraft personnel and engineers are learning how to service this aircraft, its weaponry, how to program it, and how to deliver precise strikes with high-precision weapons. All this preparation is necessary for the aircraft to operate most effectively in the Ukrainian sky, destroying enemy air, ground, and sea targets. Ukraine is also adapting infrastructure at specific airbases to facilitate the use of these aircraft."

While a Soviet howitzer has a range of about 17 kilometers, the Paladin's range is at least 28 kilometers, which can extend to 40 kilometers when using the Excalibur shell.

Russia possesses a variety of fighter jets and supplementary combat aircraft. Specifically, Russia owns the Beriev A-50, often referred to as the “flying radar”. The number of these aircraft has reportedly decreased since the start of the year. Interestingly, Ukraine claims that two A-50s have been decommissioned since the year began; a claim Russia neither refutes nor denies. In fact, Russia admits the loss of one A-50, which was irreparably damaged when a drone attacked it in Belarus last year. Russian A-50 AEW&C fleet faces dwindling 24/7 flight capacity

Following recent announcements, the Russian Aerospace Forces [VKS or RuAF] have reportedly introduced an A-50U into service. When these reported figures are considered, it suggests that one of the aircraft Ukraine claimed to have decommissioned has been reinstated. Therefore, Russia still needs to restore two more Soviet-origin A-50 airborne early warning and control [AEW&C] aircraft, including the one damaged in Belarus.

If these reports are confirmed (keep in mind these statements haven’t been formally announced), this would imply that the Russian Federation currently has six A-50U AEW&C aircraft in operation. However, these figures are based exclusively on publicly available data. It is estimated that Russia should have about 40 units, but the exact number that is operationally ready is currently unconfirmed.
