Slovakia likely to hand over MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine

(08-01-2024, 10:20 PM)Tee tiong huat Wrote:  Danish newspaper, citing Ministry of Defence of the country, reports the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by Denmark has been delayed for six months. Source: European Pravda, citing Bloomberg. The Details: Copenhagen was supposed to deliver the first six aircraft by the new year of 2024, but instead, their delivery is expected in the second quarter, the ministry informed the newspaper..

The article states that the delivery schedule has always depended on the fulfilment of several conditions, including the successful training of Ukrainian pilots and the availability of sufficient logistics and infrastructure for servicing the F-16s in Ukraine, as stated by the ministry without providing more detailed information.

Berlingske reported that, currently, six Ukrainian pilots are undergoing training on these fighters in Denmark. In August, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen promised to send 19 F-16 aircraft to Kyiv.

Background:
On 5 January, it was reported that Norway had completed the delivery to Denmark of two F-16 fighter jets intended for training Ukrainian pilots.

Norway announced this week that it would send two F-16 fighter jets to Denmark to train Ukrainian pilots in their use and confirmed that it would send 10 instructors to Denmark to help with the training.
Belgium will also send two two-seat F-16 fighter jets and about fifty personnel to Denmark between March and September to train Ukrainian pilots.

Ukrainian pilots are or will be trained in the USA, Romania, Denmark, France and the UK. Last year, six Ukrainians completed basic training, including learning English, before Christmas.

Russian dissident revealed on interview with French business magazine Challenges..Published on Jan. 30, a Swiss-based company Destinus had been working on military drones in parallel with its commercial work and providing drones to the Ukrainian armed forces for almost a year.... Clapping

47-year-old Kokorich said Destinus is “already among the main drone producers in Europe” and “Ukraine is one of our main customers.” Kokorich, a former head of Russia’s space startup Dauria Aerospace, founded Destinus in 2021.
He left native Russia & moved to US after Putin came to power. Not withstanding his technology background, increasingly found that his nationality worked against him, so he moved to Switzerland where it was less of a problem.

Destinus was set up ostensibly to design and develop commercial hypersonic cargo and passenger aircraft, demonstrating its first prototype hydrogen-powered hypersonic plane at the Paris airshow last year.

Drones for Ukraine
Kokorich said his company had supplied hundreds of low-cost drones to Ukraine. His factories currently produce three drone models. UAVs are delivered to Ukraine as separate components for assembly at undisclosed military locations.

The Destinus founder was at pains to point out that these drones were not originally designed as weapons: “All our commercial drone projects are dual-use and not purely military.”

The first model produced was Lord UAV, a propeller-driven intelligence, jamming and electromagnetic interception model also capable of striking ground targets. The Lord has a range of 750 to more than 2,000 kilometers, depending on the version used, which is greater than many of UAVs available to Ukrainian forces, such as Ukrjet UJ-22, UJ-25 Skyline and UJ-26 Beaver, whose maximum ranges are 1,000 kilometers or less.

Two other models are also at various stages of development and will soon go into full production and be provided to Kyiv.... Rotfl Clapping

Ukraine's SBU behind drone strike on key Russian oil refinery supplying army, by attack on one of Russia's largest oil refineries, Lukoil, in Volgograd overnight on Feb. 3,  SBU struck with two drones, hitting primary oil refining unit, "without which the plant will lose a significant part of its production capacity."

"The SBU continues to systematically destroy the infrastructure used by Russia to wage war in Ukraine," the NV source said. "By attacking oil refineries that support Russia's military-industrial complex, we not only disrupt fuel logistics for enemy vehicles but also reduce funds flowing into the Russian budget."

U.S. production of 155mm artillery shells is slated to rise from 28,000 last October—the most recent month for which hard numbers have been released—to roughly 37,000 in April and about 60,000 in October 2024, according to a slide shared at a CSIS think tank event. Ammo shortage forces Ukraine to prioritize front line sectors - ISW

The Army hopes to rapidly increase production in 2025, from just under 75,000 shells that April to 100,000 in October,  planned increase is due in part to a new factory the Army is building in Texas, which will “have an entirely new way of making the shell, using entirely new tech we've never used before,” Bush said.

The availability of ammunition, especially large artillery shells like 155mm, has kept Ukraine from matching Russia’s volume of fire. Currently, Ukrainian forces fire around 2,000 shells per day, about one-fifth the Russian output.

Read also: U.S. Senate may vote on Ukraine aid package Feb 7 - Ambassador Markarova
The massive use of the munitions like 155mm shells may trigger a rethinking of how much the U.S. needs in its own stockpiles, Bush said.

“If larger stockpiles are a way to mitigate risk for an extended conventional conflict, then that needs to be looked at,” he said. U.S. has not needed to increase production of smaller artillery shells, tank shells, or mortar rounds for Ukraine, as the U.S. has been able to meet Ukraine’s needs without significantly running down its own stockpiles, Bush said.

As reported, Estonia's Permanent Representative to NATO, Juri Luik, believes the European Union will not be able to provide Ukraine with a million rounds of ammunition by March, but will be able to complete these deliveries by the end of the year

INSIGHTS & ANALYSIS. -- Black Sea Successes and Ukraine’s Path to Victory. February 5, 2024. Ukraine’s operational success in the Northwestern Black Sea offers a beacon of light which, with Western support, could chart the way to eventual victory over Russia. UN and Turkey, collapsed after Russian obstruction,  ultimate destruction by Kremlin in July, followed by a renewed drone and missile campaign on Ukrainian port infrastructure. Russia struck historic heart of Odesa too. Yet Ukraine pushed back forcefully at Russia’s attempt to resume its blockade and opened a unilateral maritime corridor hugged the shore all the way to NATO territory, this corridor started with some traffic, substantially increased shipment in volumes, reaching 20 mill tons of agricultural & non-agricultural cargoes in first 6-months, thus nearing pre-war levels.
It's on course to surpass numbers achieved under the grain deal, which saw some 30 mil tons annually,

How did this happen?
Ukraine organized a highly effective campaign against Russian in Crimea Black Sea Fleet, combined with Ukrainian audacity mix of domestic and Western capabilities, including drones and long-range Anglo-French cruise missiles. This sustained campaign, a continuation of Ukraine’s 2022 operations saw the sinking of flagship Moskva & recovery Snake Island in 2022, after led to destruction of Black Sea Fleet HQ in Sevastopol with senior commanders planning meeting and some 20% of the fleet distroy. August, then drones traveled 800km (500 miles) to hit a Russian ship near Novorossiysk, in the Northeast where a growing number of Russian vessels were seeking safety. Kyiv said Russian ports potentilally is considered a military threat. The result now Russian naval vessels are no longer safe, as the sinking of the missile corvette Ivanovets on January 31 underlined. Thus Kremlin’s grip on Ukraine and the Black Sea’s international waters has loosened.

As nternational community stood in the face of Russian threats on navigation and food security, Kyiv called Kremlin’s bluff & restored order, improvement of air defense in the region has front with Ukraine bringing down Russian aircraft in the South — including three Su-34 bombers in a missile ambush — a deterrent to Moscow’s aerial campaigns. As a result, while Ukraine’s land counteroffensive faltered and in the fall, it now holds the initiative in Northern Black Sea and can claim operational success in sea warfare. There r key lessons to be drawn from...

US Senate to vote on standalone foreign aid package including Ukraine After failure of previous bill included border security measures, new bill military assistance for Ukraine and Israel and humanitarian funds for Gaza and West Bank.

Senate will reconvene Thursday to vote on a supplemental funding bill that would send billions of dollars to Ukraine and Israel, after a bipartisan border and national security package failed to advance on Wednesday.

Like the bipartisan bill, the foreign aid package would include military assistance for Ukraine, security assistance for Israel and humanitarian assistance for civilians in Ukraine, Gaza and the West Bank. The bill would not include the US border security measures outlined in the bipartisan bill, although some Republican senators expressed interest in adding border provisions through an amendment process.
Senate held an initial vote on foreign aid package on Wednesday, in which 58 members supported advancing it. But 60 votes will ultimately be required to approve the bill, so there is currently not enough support to get the legislation passed in the Senate.

Russia Enlists 30,000 Soldiers Monthly for Ukraine Conflict....(to replace those missing, kill and those)

Vadym Skibitskyi, deputy chief major general of Ukraine's main military intelligence arm, has recently reported that Russia is enlisting approximately 30,000 soldiers monthly. Although this recruitment of soldiers each month suffices to compensate for frontline losses, Russia would have to initiate a larger-scale mobilization to build a more substantial strategic reserve.

This rate of recruitment, which averages 1,000 to 1,100 people per day, is in response to the significant casualties Russia has sustained in ongoing Ukraine conflict. This info is in line with the observations made by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which corroborates the scale of Russia's efforts to maintain operational rotations in Ukraine. Targeting by year 2025, to hitt 500k Casualty.

Skibitskyi's statements shed light on the high-casualty approach of the Russian military, particularly in strategic urban battles such as those in Bakhmut and Avdiivka. Analysts have observed the continuation of these tactics across various fronts, notably the United States' report in October about Russia employing "human wave" tactics. These involve deploying underprepared and poorly equipped troops into high-intensity combat scenarios, often resulting in significant losses.

Ukraine latest news: In reinforcing Avdiivka. And there are good reasons to believe it’s bolstering the eastern city—current the locus of Russia’s winter offensive—with one if many of the best brigades in the Ukrainian army.

Starting with 3rd Assault Brigade, Ukrainian ground-combat brigade that know for sure was in reserve in eastern Ukraine as of last week. Brig. Gen. Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of Tavriya group of forces in Avdiivka, announced the reinforcement on Saturday.

“We'r strengthen & blocking line, set up additional firing positions and use fresh effective forces,” Tarnavskyi wrote. “Logistical delivery continues.”
Ukrainian forces are accepting enormous risk. After 4-months of hard fighting, Russian troops from 2nd and 41st Combined Arms Armies finally breached Avdiivka—a key Ukrainian stronghold just five miles northwest of Russian-occupied Donetsk, earlier  mth as approached within a few hundred yards of main road by which Ukrainian garrison, centered on the 110th Mechanized Brigade, gets supplies into the city.

Tarnavskyi had two options. Pull back 110th Brigade’s survivors from exposed eastern part of city or consolidate Ukrainian line in central Avdiivka or just outside city and or: reinforce 110th Brigade and try to push much Russian force away fron the rail and away from garrison’s supply lines.

Breaking down the House endgames for the Senate's foreign aid plan

Bill assisting Ukraine, Israel & Taiwan is set to pass as soon as Tuesday. Then comes a multi-front battle across Capitol to determine its fate. Senate is set to approve $95B national security funding package as soon as Tuesday, delivering long-stalled aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Then House will take its turn — and there will be a multi-directional battle to decide the fate of the bill.

That’s b'cos GOP’s thin margin of control leaves Speaker Mike Johnson with few politically palatable choices as he considers Senate aid bill that many in his party want to scrap. But if Johnson tries to ignore the bill, a potential rebellion could begin to brew among rank-and-file members in the ideological middle who still want to see Ukraine aid pass.

Several players or blocs are positioned to grab power over the aid measure once it reaches the House — starting with Johnson himself. it’s hard to see that type of response quieting the eagerness among establishment and centrist Republicans to vote on the legislation anyway.

The Bill, which could see a final Senate vote in the early hours Tuesday morning, does not include changes to US immigration policy.

Johnson had previously stated that Senate's first Bill - which included some of the harshest immigration curbs in decades but which he said still did not go far enough - would be "dead on arrival" in his chamber.

His rhetoric matched that of former president Donald Trump, who forcefully called for Bill to be rejected as he runs for office again and seeks to exploit Joe Biden's perceived weakness on immigration

Despite months of bipartisan negotiations over the Bill, Senate Republicans ultimately voted to block it from proceeding. Another Bill excluding immigration provisions however gained enough support from Republicans to move forward in the Democratic-controlled Senate, making it almost certain it will pass a final simple-majority vote around midweek.

Germany prepares plan to transfer long-range systems to Ukraine; Taurus not mentioned. The media emphasise that the project does not mention Taurus cruise missiles directly. But the document states that "the supply of additional long-range weapons systems and ammunition needed for Ukraine (...) to be able to carry out targeted strikes under international law on strategically important targets located far into the Russian aggressors’ rear".

The kind of long-range weapons systems we are talking about has not been reported.

The German govt coalition is convinced that Ukrainians should be able to attack military depots or supply routes far behind the contact line. Thus, Ukrainian troops will be better protected.

Taurus can reach targets at a distance of more than 500 km. In addition to weapons for Ukraine, the proposal also includes new political and economic sanctions against Russia.

Reported by European Pravda, the govt coalition pressured Scholz to transfer Taurus to Ukraine. Before that, the UK offered Berlin a way to solve the Taurus dilemma for Ukraine.
