Nearly 10,000 Evacuated in Ukraine's Kharkiv Region: Governor. Kharkiv Region Governor Oleg Synegubov added that Ukraine's armed forces had repelled two attempts to break through defenses overnight.

Over a week after its launch, "a total of 9,907 people have been evacuated," they were fleeing Russian soldiers who managed to advance between 5 to 10 kilometres (3 to 6 miles) along the northeastern border before being stopped by Ukrainian forces.

One critical factor in Russia's recent battlefield successes in Ukraine is its extensive use of glide bombs. Every week, hundreds of these large, deadly weapons rain down on Ukraine, creating 20-meter-wide craters and obliterating military positions and entire settlements.

Russia has heavily relied on glide bombs in its new offensive on Kharkiv Oblast, clearing the way for ground troops. Since May 10, Russian forces have captured several villages near the border and entered the town of Vovchansk. Despite their simplicity and low cost, glide bombs have become one of Russia's most effective weapons during the full-scale war, previously contributing to the fall of the strategic city of Avdiivka in February – Russia’s first major gain in nine months.

Experts warn that these bombs could pose an even greater threat to Ukraine, which currently has little defense against them, as Russia is expected to continue its mass deployment of glide bombs to support further offensive operations.

What is a glide bomb?
A glide bomb is a standard air-dropped bomb modified to be launched from a distance rather than directly over the target. Glide bombs date back to World War II, with the German Fritz X bomb being the first model. The U.S. later developed and used several types of glide bombs in conflicts in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Russia mainly uses Soviet-era FAB-family bombs, upgraded with a Unified Gliding and Correction Module, which includes wings that flip out as the weapon is released by the aircraft and a satellite navigation system. MOSCOW, May 17 (Reuters) - A fire triggered by a Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's Tuapse oil refinery on the Black Sea coast has forced an emergency shut down of the refinery, two sources familiar with the matter said fire at the refinery, owned by Rosneft, was extinguished, Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported on Friday.

Tuapse plant's annual capacity is 12 mil metric tons (240,000 barrels per day), produces naphtha, fuel oil, vacuum gasoil & high-sulphur diesel, and supplies fuel mainly to Turkey, China, Malaysia and Singapore. In 2023, plant processed 9.378 mil tons of crude oil, producing 3.306 mil tons of gasoil and 3.123 million tons of fuel oil.

Ukrainian forces gained more solid positions in Kharkiv Oblast, President Zelensky said in the evening address on May 19. They launched a new offensive on May 10 northern Kharkiv toward Lyptsi and Vovchansk, a town located less than 5 k/m (3 miles) from Russian border around 50 k/m (31 miles) from the city of Kharkiv.

Zelensky said he received updates from Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi who is currently staying with front-line assault brigades.
"As a result these days, whole week, we have secured stronger positions in Kharkiv. 57th Brigade & 82nd Air Assault Brigade, thank you, warriors!" Zelensky said. He also said Ukraine successfully repels Russian assaults in Donetsk including area near city of Chasiv Yar, which became one of the main strategic targets.

Russian troops have not been achieving their aim of spreading Ukrainian forces along entire front line in Kharkiv & Donetsk, the president added. The Russia's offensive in Kharkiv in mid-May could be the first of several waves, & Russian forces may target regional capital, Kharkiv, Zelensky said in an interview with AFP on May 17.

Russian troops managed to advance as far as 10 kilometers (6 miles) as a result. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with Agence France-Presse (AFP). Kyiv would need 120 to 130 F-16 fighters or other advanced warplanes to battle Russia.

According to Zelensky, Kyiv needs this number of F-16s “in order to have parity” with Moscow.
Moscow had repeatedly stated flooding Ukraine with weapons would neither affect Russian resolve nor change course of its special military ops. It also threatened to annihilate F-16 fighters and called them no match to Su-35 fighters.

MOSCOW – The Russian military said on May 20 it had taken full control of the settlement of Bilohorivka in Ukraine’s eastern Luhansk region and had taken up better positions in the area.
The Russian Ministry said it forces had been involved in fierce clashes in Kharkiv region near Vovchansk, Starytsia and Hlyboke, earlier in May thrust into Kharkiv region. What Russian President Vladimir Putin said was an operation to create a buffer zone to protect Russia’s border regions.

Ukraine’s officials said its troops still control about 60% of Vovchansk, fighting house-to-house to defend the border town in north-eastern Kharkiv region from Russian attacks, in their most detailed public assessment of battle to date.

Capturing Vovchansk would be Moscow’s most significant gain since it opened a new front in the northern part of Kharkiv region in May, stretching Kyiv’s forces into 3rd year full-scale invasion.

“The enemy continues to try, especially inside Vovchansk, to push out Ukrainian armed forces”.
Russia says it has taken full control of Luhansk’s Bilohorivka in eastern. Vovchansk’s police chief said earlier in May Russian forces had taken positions in the town and called the situation “extremely difficult”. The Russia’s push in Kharkiv region assaults in areas of Vovchansk and Lyptsi forced Ukraine to send reinforcements stretching its troops along more than 1,000km front line in the east and south.

MOSCOW said on May 19 Ukraine launched a major drone attack on Russian regions forcing a oil refinery in southern Russia to halt ops, and that Kyiv's forces had fired US, French and Ukrainian missiles into Russian-held territory. About drones, including (plus) Ukraine's Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) has attack Crimea, with French guided "Hammer" bombs and US High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).

Russia soldiers, their forces had stop Ukraine's 24th, 42nd mechanized brigades, the 125th Air Defence Brigade at Lukiantsi, also at Vesele & Radhospne in Kharkiv region & also repelled attacks by Kyiv's forces at other points. As Russia reported a rise in Ukrainian attacks on its territory since its forces opened a new front northeastern Ukraine's Kharkiv region with US aid. (May).

President Vladimir Putin says Russia is carving out a buffer zone there to protect Russia from such attacks, which Russia says risk triggering a broader war between Russia and the West if Ukraine uses Western weapons. Mr Putin said on May 17 that Russia had no plans currently to take Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-biggest city,

White House said on May 17 says US policy on not encouraging Ukraine's use of US weapons against Russian sovereign territory had not changed. (But) We do not encourage nor do we enable attacks using US-supplied weapons systems inside Russian territory. That’s the policy," Mr John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman, 

"That has not changed." That says after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on May 15 US does not encourage strike targets inside Russia with US-supplied weapons but believes it is a decision Kyiv should make for itself.
