Not sure about the US, but winter in Canada to me is definitely not ideal for the elderly.
Worse will be if there is a power outage during a winter snow storm and having choked water pipes.
Similar harsh winter in China NE provinces are leading to decline in their population as the younger gen moves out to settle in the warmer south.

That’s true…it is common to queue for food at food bank or vans organised by charity organisations.
Many years ago, I saw people queueing for free sandwiches at a van along the street in Melbourne, so I also queued up to get freebies…later I realised it was for homeless people, the van came once a week only.
