Ukrainian Reinforcements Are Counterattacking Outside Pokrovsk. Russian assault on the city is losing momentum, for now. The Russian seem to  be overconfidence on the part. Russians 2nd Combined Arms Army units grounded toward the Ukrainian stronghold of Pokrovsk since Sept 2024. Yes,  2nd CAA—dozens of regiments and brigades strong—outnumbers the Ukrainian force around Pokrovsk, the Tavriya operational strategic group, around four to one. Yes, the Ukrainians have been steadily retreating along the Pokrovsk axis since at least mid-February, when the Russians breached the defenses of the fortress city of Avdiivka on the axis’ eastern end.

With dozen of battalions from 8 or so brigades to their surprise invasion of Russia’s Kursk’s, they have kept 4 or 5 brigades—each with uto 2,000 troops & hundreds of vehicles—in reserve. Russian propagandist Evgeny Norin described these units as “reasonably intact well-equipped,” reserves are finally joining fight along last line of trenches & fortified Pokrovsk for many miles. “Happening is exactly was predicted by Ukrainian armed forces have begun counterattacking.” A Russian blogger reported that’s helping@frontline, at least for now.
This has surprised some observers who blamed a lack of fortifications, rather than a lack of troops, for the Tavriya op strategic group’s months long retreat east of Pokrovsk. “NOW, public discourse suggesting deployment additional brigades work. Frontelligence Insight noted. “Yes, here we are, seeing it does make a difference.”

Don’t expect immediate dramatic changes around Pokrovsk, the Ukrainian reinforcements—at a minimum, the national guard’s Kara-Dag Brigade and army’s 12th Azov Brigade & 93rd Mechanized Brigade are conducting small-scale attacks, main effect to slow or slightly roll back Russian gains.
But the Russians can’t afford to lose momentum. Everyday they fail to advance is a day Ukrainians can dig in & reinforce positions around Pokrovsk ahead of coming winter. That implications whole wider war in Ukraine. “Up coming battle for Pokrovsk will be climax of enemy’s offensive op in the southwestern theater operations 2024,” Ukrainian Ctr Defense Strategies predicted. Kara-Dag Brigade’s fierce actions in Selydove, a front-line town southeast of Pokrovsk, might be most significant of the recent counterattacks. For days now, the brigade’s T-64 tanks have been blowing up & is capturing Russian tanks, fighting vehicles too, as they trying to infiltrate Selydove along the main east-west road into town.

The high terrain in and around Pokrovsk has the effect of channeling attacking forces into city’s lower southern approaches. That also channels them into Selydove, whose peak elevation is around 100 feet below the highest ground in Pokrovsk.

It’s fair to say Russians must get through Selydove in order to have a clear shot at Pokrovsk. “Without securing the Selydove area, the enemy cannot sustain their offensive,” CDS explained.

But now that fresh & well-equipped Ukrainian troops are in Selydove, & attacking, the Russian hope for conquest of Pokrovskonce seemingly inevitable— Putin's is a helpless man likely for now. Big Grin

On a day later, or maybe even same one— Ukraine pulled off a daring heist @same underpass discovered an abandoned Russian T-72 tank & stole it nabbed an intact but abandoned Russian T-72.  What’s special about heist is Selydove is an extremely dangerous as Russian 2nd Combined Arms Army is closes in, aiming to flank Pokrovsk. Aa drone by Ukrainian national guard’s Kara-Dag Brigade was watching on T-72 rolled up to the underpass amid the wreckage & skirmish in same location, up-armored, camouflaged Russian tank fired something to north then, shockingly, the-crew bailed out of 46-ton tank, one Ukrainian person-view drone targeted the fleeing Russian tankers. It’s unclear why Russians abandoned undamaged T-72 vehicle suffered some kind of mechanical failure engine problem or tank was a ripe prize for anyone brave enough to recover it. Battlefield conditions favored an under-armor recovery. In heist, the density of land extremely dangerous for armored vehicles from either side:

In Selydove. Kara-Dag Brigade’s 42-ton T-64s have been roaming town with unusual freedom, even in broad daylight—perhaps compensating extreme shortage of infantry that has vexed the entire Ukrainian military in recent months. T-64’s 3-crew spotted unoccupied Russian T-72 rushed into action, drone continued to observe as, under the cover of a smoke screen, they attached a towing cable to T-72, video montage released by Kara-Dag Brigade ends with T-64 dragging T-72 away to west—toward main Ukrainian line.

MOSCOW: Russia said on Saturday (Sep 7) it had seized another village in eastern Ukraine, where Moscow's troops are continuing to advance. The defence ministry said Russian forces "have liberated village of Kalynove" in Donetsk region, which lies around 25km? southeast of the key logistics hub of Pokrovsk?, held by Kyiv's forces. (Why Russian is says to be very near to their target). Though Russian troops have been advancing on Pokrovsk for months, Ukraine has ordered the mandatory evacuation of children from the city.

Moscow has claimed to have captured a string of villages in the area, even as it struggles to fight off a major Ukrainian counterattack into its own western Kursk region. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia's "primary objective" in the conflict was to capture the entire Donbas region - which consists of Ukraine's Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

Moscow claimed to have annexed them, along with the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in 2022, months after it launched its full-scale military offensive and despite not having full control over them.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. 51 people had been killed & over 200 wounded, as Putin Missiles attack, at targeted educational institution & even hospital.

Ukraine is not happy, so now, this year is preparing to fight back—with its own glide bombs. A recent video shot by the crew of a Ukrainian air force Sukhoi Su-27 fighter depicts an air force Sukhoi Su-24 bomber carrying a prototype gliding munition under its wing.

Not contented with few American-made JDAM-ER & French-made Hammer glide bombs, the Ukrainians clearly intend to arm their jets with locally made bombs, as well. Air force brigadier general Serhii Holubotsov announced back in June that the service was developing a new glide and guidance kit to transform Soviet-vintage unguided bombs into precision munitions. The test flight on that Su-24 was an important step in the new weapon’s development. The Ukrainian air force obviously is happy with the Hammer’s range and precision.

Ukrainian it’s obviously unhappy with supply of bomb for France, who pledged to provide just 50 Hammers a mth—whose is afar too few to match roughly  Putin's 3,000 KABs the Russians drop all along 700-mile front line every month.

Ukraine's population, which was already shrinking fast before Russia's invasion, has seen declines due to migration, low birth rates, and a conflict that continues to claim more lives.

Before the war, the population stood at around 45 million. Now, it is estimated to have fallen by about 10 million.

DESPERATE NEED FOR SOLDIERS
The demographic under the largest threat is young men aged under 30, which make up the smallest population group in the country.. They were born during the economic collapse of the Soviet Union, and the ongoing war could shrink their generation even more.

Currently, less than 5 million men are under the age of 30. Before Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, this figure was about 6 million. After nearly three years of war, the country is in desperate need of more soldiers.

More – and younger – men have been called up to fight. In April, a new law was passed to lower the conscription age from 27 to 25. Meanwhile, some men who have not reached the draft-eligible age have volunteered to help defend their country.

“I spent a lot of time preparing, both mentally and physically, and I had to persuade my mother before coming here,” said a 20-year-old former coal miner known as Nikita...To expand  draft pool further, a new law now allows some convicts to join the fight, depending on the severity of their crimes. So far, more than 3,000 prisoners have taken up the offer. Among them bodybuilder known as Andre, who was sentenced to four years in jail for stealing money from his employer.

Signing on with military is a chance to make things right, he said. They can erase all violations you had and pardon you. That means you can start all over again. Such a chance has never been given to anyone before,” he added.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken attends a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister Andrii Sybiha in Kyiv, on Wednesday.

KYIV — The top U.S. diplomat made a rare wartime visit to Kyiv on Wednesday, offering a sympathetic ear to its leaders as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mounted a push to win permission to use long-range U.S. missile systems to strike deep into Russia, despite being rejected last week by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Kyiv’s attempt to sway the Biden administration came as Ukraine has faced heavy bombardment from Russia in recent days — especially on its power sector — a situation that Blinken warned ahead of the visit could soon get worse after the United States accused Iran of shipping short-range ballistic missiles to Russia earlier this month. The Ukrainian effort is a continuation of a dynamic that has marked relations between Kyiv and Washington since the full-scale Russian invasion two and a half years ago. Ukraine has pushed for more and better weaponry, while Washington has resisted, fearing escalation with Russia, only to relent later.

With President Joe Biden’s time in office waning, pressure is increasing both on the Ukrainians and the White House to lock in decisions about the future of the conflict now, ahead of any possible policy shift should former president Donald Trump regain the White House. Trump, asked at the presidential debate on Tuesday whether he wanted Kyiv to win the war, deflected and said that “I want the war to stop.”

Ukrainians argue that being empowered to use the weaponry against Russian territory would reduce the threat from Russia by forcing it to pull key forces deeper inside its country. They also want to be able to hit a bridge that connects the Crimean Peninsula with the Russian mainland and forms a key military supply route. But Biden has been cautious, worried that allowing the change could draw the United States more deeply into direct conflict with the Kremlin.

“It’s wonderful to be back in Kyiv even in these most challenging times, maybe especially in challenging times,” Blinken said Wednesday ahead of a meeting with his Ukrainian and British counterparts. “The United Kingdom and the United States stand shoulder to shoulder in support of Ukraine,” he met Zelensky will give top U.S. diplomat a chance to hear “exactly how Ukrainians see their needs toward what objectives, and what we can do to support those needs,” Blinken said a day earlier in London, before flying to Poland and taking an overnight journey by armored train to the Ukrainian capital. Blinken didn’t plan to spend the night in Kyiv during his lightning visit to Ukraine. But he did stop for a bowl of borscht, the famous Ukrainian beet soup@boutique restaurant of a chef, Yevhen Klopotenko, who successfully campaigned for soup to be added to a UNESCO cultural heritage list.

Story continues below.....Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump debate aired during the train journey & some diplomats stayed up to catch the first minutes of the joust to prepare themselves for questions in Kyiv about U.S. political situation.
Some Euro policymakers are also making public calls for lifting all restrictions on weapons, in an effort to push US to get on board. Diplomats wouldn’t rule out U.S. policy shift as goal posts have repeatedly moved during war. “Anything near border is seen as fairer game, but debate now is about range of how deep they can strike,” a Euro diplomat said, speaking on anonymity comment. “The U.S. is more cautious on this. There are several countries calling for lifting all restrictions but most of them haven’t provided those long-range weapons so that’s a little bit easier to say.”

Story continues below....Ukrainian leaders last mth made a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, seizing thousand of ss miles of Russian territory on first major Ukrainian advance into their aggressor since February 2022 invasion. The Ukrainian move has unsettled many ordinary Russians & delivered a morale boost to Ukrainian public. Leaders in Kyiv say that the seizure of territory will help increase pressure on Moscow to make a deal to end the war.

Blinken traveled to Ukraine with the new British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who has been in office since his Labour Party took power in July. The U.S. diplomat said that he and Lammy would bring their findings back to their leaders ahead of a Friday meeting in Washington between Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The two leaders will discuss the Ukrainian request, Blinken said. Britain has supplied Ukraine with long-range Storm Shadow missile systems but has contended with the same questions about strikes into Russian territory.

The Biden administration supplied Ukraine with long-range ATACMS missiles last September, but has not allowed them to be used against Russian territory. The missiles, which have a range of about 180 miles, have been used extensively against Russian forces in Crimea, Ukrainian territory that the Kremlin occupied in 2014. Ukraine has a dwindling stockpile of the missiles, and U.S. officials say that the Pentagon’s own stocks are also sufficiently limited that they cannot offer many more to Kyiv.

Interactive Map: Ukraine's Surprise Invasion Of Russia's Kursk Region. Map is updated daily to include latest developments, any changes in territorial control

On August 6, Ukrainian forces crossed from the Sumy region into Russia and swiftly seized a significant part of Sudzhansky district in Kursk
Over ensuing weeks, Ukraine made a number of substantial headline-grabbing gains in Russian region, even Moscow admitting Kyiv had captured scores of settlements and occupied hundreds of square kilometers of territory.

In making the largest incursion onto Russian soil since World War II, Kyiv says its aims include pushing back Russian artillery, disrupting supply lines, and diverting forces from the frontline in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, where Moscow has been making grinding gains in recent months.

Meanwhile, Russian forces have reportedly begun attacking Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region and have retaken some territory. As fighting continues to rage in Kursk, RFE/RL’s Russian Service has been keeping track of Ukraine’s incursion with an interactive map of events that uses information compiled and verified from open sources, such as Twitter and Telegram.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Russia had begun "counter-offensive actions, which is going in line with our Ukrainian plan".
Russia said its "Units of the North" forces had reclaimed the settlements over two days in the area around Snagost, on the western flank of the area occupied by Ukraine in its campaign launched on 6 August.
The first indication of a counteroffensive had come from Chechen special forces commander, Maj Gen Apti Alaudinov, who said six Ukrainian brigades had suffered heavy casualties.

A Ukrainian officer fighting in the Kursk region told the BBC that the Russian counteroffensive had begun some distance to the west of Sudzha.
"The fighting is very tough and the situation is not in our favour as of now," the officer said on condition of anonymity.
Ukraine's offensive was launched with the apparent aim of distracting Russia from its push into eastern Ukraine. It now claims up to 1,300 sq km (500 sq miles) of Russian territory.
However, Russian forces continued to seize villages in eastern Ukraine and are closing in on the strategic town of Pokrovsk.
Analysts from the US-based Institute for the Study of War said the size, scale and potential prospects of the Russian counterattacks were unclear and it was premature to draw any conclusions.

Russians face significant challenges in counterattacks in Kursk Oblast – ISW
Experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have noted minor advances in Kursk Oblast, in areas that are not fully controlled by Ukraine's defence forces. However, they have emphasised Russian troops are likely to face greater difficulties in further attempts to counterattack in areas still under Ukrainian control. Quote: 12 Sept only marginal gains, likely due to continued Ukrainian offensive op.

Ukraine added geolocated footage, also published on 12 September, shows Ukrainian infantry crossing into southwestern part of Tetkino, around 40 km southwest of the Ukrainian salient in Kursk Oblast. Further footage reveals Ukrainian armoured vehicles and infantry bypassing Russian dragon's teeth anti-tank defences near the Russian-Ukrainian border southwest of Novy Put (southwest of Glushkovo) without facing resistance, suggesting that Ukrainian forces have advanced in the area and that Russian forces were not ready to use these obstacles to stop cross-border attacks and continued Ukrainian assaults near Novy Put, Medvezhye (southeast of Glushkovo), Snagost, Olgovka (east of Korenevo) and Fanaseyevka (southeast of Sudzha).

Allowing Ukraine to use ATACMS to strike targets deep inside Russia is the subject of "intense consultations," U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, said on Sept. 14. Speaking at the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv, Sullivan reiterated no decision had yet been made, a day after President Joe Biden and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer met in Washington to discuss the issue. Ukraine had been hoping for permission to be granted talks to use Western-supplied long-range missiles – Storm Shadow and ATACMS – to strike military targets deep inside Russian territory. Starmer left Washington with no such announcement being made, putting Kyiv's hopes on hold once again.

News Feed, ATACMS, Jake Sullivan, Long-range missiles, ATACMS restrictions subject of 'intense consultations' between Ukraine and allies, Sulliva. Allowing Ukraine to use ATACMS to strike targets deep inside Russia is the subject of "intense consultations," U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, said on Sept. 14. Speaking at Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv, Sullivan reiterated no decision yet been made, a day after President Joe Biden ,& U.K. PM Keir Starmer met in Washington to discuss issue. Ukraine had been hoping for permission to be granted during the talks to use two Western-supplied long-range missiles – Storm Shadow and ATACMS – to strike military targets such as airfields located deep inside Russian territory.

Starmer left Washington with no such announcement being made, putting Kyiv's hopes on hold once again. "I understand Ukraine's perspective" Sullivan said, adding: "But rather than me trying to elaborate on reasoning one way or the other, something I think a subject of intense consultation among allies and partners, and (discussed) between President (Biden) and President Zelensky."

Zelensky is due to travel to New York later this month for the UN General Assembly Speaking at the same conference a day earlier, Zelensky said U.S.-supplied long-range ATACMS missiles are "pointless" in Ukraine due to their limited quantity and restrictions on strikes deep inside Russia imposed by Western partners. U.S. began providing Ukraine Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), which have a range of up to 300 kilometers (190 miles), in the spring. These missiles have been used in Russian-occupied Crimea, Washington's restrictions prevent their use on Russian soil."ATACMS in the form that we have today (in Ukraine) is pointless if you cannot use it on their (Russian) military bases, airfields with helicopters and airplanes. It's pointless," Zelensky said.

"If ATACMS has a big restriction on the use of missiles because there are few of them... Unfortunately, it doesn't work. The NYT reported that a decision will be made about Storm Shadows before one is reached over the ATACMS. The Ukraine has been pleading for permission for months, it's understood the stance of Western nations has changed in light of Iran supplying Russia with ballistic missiles.

"We've now seen this action by Russia acquiring ballistic missiles from Iran, further empower their aggression in Ukraine. So if anyone is taking escalatory action, it would appear to be Mr. Putin he himself and not Russia,
