ISW observes Russian troops advancing on northwestern flank of Avdiivka, permanent condition, only continued Western support for Ukraine can ensure Putin’s maximalist objectives remain unattainable. ISW assessed that collapse Western aid would likely lead to eventual collapse of Ukraine’s ability to hold off Russian military and the current positional war in Ukraine is not a stable stalemate b'cos current instable balance could readily be tipped in either direction by decisions made by the West.
US National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby stated that the White House assesses that Russian forces will be able to conduct offensive operations more easily when winter weather conditions become more conducive for mechanised manoeuvre warfare (likely in January–February 2024) — an assessment that is consistent with ISW’s observations and assessments about the tempo of fighting in Ukraine during the winter.

A senior Ukrainian Defence Ministry official has been detained over allegations he embezzled 1.5 billion Ukrainian hryvnia ($40 million) relating to an artillery shells contract, according to the Ukrainian Security Service. SBU says the official signed an agreement with a special export company to purchase a wholesale batch of artillery shells in December last year. However, a more favourable contract for the supply was later signed with same manufacturer – one that did not involve intermediaries. SBU said this significantly shortened delivery time and reduced cost of the products.
Defense official extended the original – more expensive - contract and funds totalling 1.5 billion Ukrainian hryvnia ($40 million) were transferred to the accounts of an affiliated foreign intermediary firm. it has found documents confirming illegal activity. official faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty.

European Union on Thursday paid the final tranche of a multibillion-euro support package to Ukraine to help keep its war-ravaged economy afloat this year, leaving Ukraine on financial lifeline from Euro as of next month. Zoro '0'.
The EU has sent 1.5 billion euros ($1.6 billion) each month in 2023 to ensure macroeconomic stability and rebuild critical infrastructure destroyed in the war. It’s also helping to pay wages and pensions, keep hospitals and schools running, and provide shelter for people forced from their homes.

BELGRADE: Ukraine’s war efforts are at risk of international sabotage. If, in 2024, Kyiv does not continue to receive military and financial aid from the United States and its Western allies, it could not only lose more territory to Russia, but also face a political crisis at home, which is the last thing the war-torn nation needs.
The decision by US Republicans to block an emergency spending bill to fund support for the war in Ukraine already has had an impact on the situation in Donbas in the east of Ukraine, where Russian forces made small but significant tactical gains.

Ukraine announced on last Friday it had downed three Russian Su-34s, though the weapons system used has not been disclosed. Some military-themed Telegram channels suggested the possible use of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system.
1st Batch Of Ukrainian Fighter Pilots Complete F-16 Basic Training In UK; Get Ready For ‘Mission Russia’
Note: Su-34 [NATO codename “Fullback] aircraft is essentially a two-seat air-to-ground adaptation of Su-27 “Fulcrum.” They are launch platforms of guided aerial bombs & Kh-59 missiles, which the Russians use to attack Ukraine and other areas of Ukraine.
The commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Mykola Oleschuk, said the operation was payback for an earlier Russian drone attack on which one of the drones was written “Die Bitch” in Russia. In a Telegram post, he wrote: “Great idea! Here’s our answer! Today, at noon, in the Southern sector – minus three Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers!”
He added: “Eternal flight, ‘brothers’!”
OTHER TOPICS OF INTEREST --- Sweeping Changes Proposed to Ukraine’s Draft Law
The proposal introduces email and employer summons, mobilization for some with disabilities, stricter rules for higher education deferments and military registration for Ukrainians abroad.
Ihnat added that since the downing of the aircraft there had been fewer guided bomb attacks in the Kherson region but said more anti-aircraft weapons were still needed by Ukraine.
“The Air Force can conduct such operations in different sectors,” he said. “The only question is that there should be more of these systems, and this issue is being discussed as part of our recently created air defense coalition.”
Russian forces continue to bombard Kherson region with artillery – four people and nine others were wounded including one child.”
Kremlin forces fired 71 shells at Kherson from Saturday to Sunday morning, hitting the city centre, residential areas, medical and educational institutions and “critical infrastructure facilities.” the region's governor Oleksandr Prokudin wrote on Telegram.
President Zelensky condemned what he called “brutal terrorist shelling deliberately targeting life-sustaining civilian infrastructure and ordinary streets folks.” “Unfortunately there are fatalities. My condolences to the families,” the president added in a message on social media.

After five warplanes are downed in one week, Zelenskyy says every Russian pilot has to make a choice. President Zelenskyy has called on Russian pilots to choose for themselves whether to continue fighting in the war against Ukraine after five Russian warplanes were shot down in a single week.
On Christmas Eve, our soldiers shot down almost 30 Shahed drones, several missiles, and two more Russian military aircraft, all in one evening. In total, we shot down five Sukhoi fighter jets in the week before Christmas. This is very impressive. Everyone delivering results like these in our Air Force, all our anti-aircraft gunners, soldiers in mobile firing groups, and air defence units of the Ground Forces: great job. Thank you.
Every Russian pilot has to make a clear choice for himself whether to go on participating in this war. Our air defence will only get stronger. Especially when we receive the additional systems that have already been agreed on and F-16s."

Russia warns Japan over providing Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine.... MOSCOW: A move by Japan to provide Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine will have "grave consequences" for Russia-Japan ties, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday (Dec 27).
Relations between Moscow and Tokyo, already difficult, have deteriorated sharply since Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in Feb. 2022. Japan has joined its Western allies in imposing sweeping economic sanctions on Russia.. Last week, Japan said it would prepare to ship Patriot air defence missiles to the United States after revising its arms export guidelines, in Tokyo's first major overhaul of such export curbs in nine years.
Although Japan's new export controls still prevent it from shipping weapons to countries that are at war, it may indirectly benefit Ukraine in its war with Russia as it gives the United States extra capacity to provide military aid to Kyiv.
"The Japanese side loses control over the weapons with which Washington can now do whatever it wants," Zakharova told a weekly briefing. "It cannot be ruled out that under an already tested scheme Patriot missiles will end up in Ukraine."

Several countries — including Germany, Britain and Norway — are increasing production of weapons, especially the artillery ammunition that Ukraine so badly needs. Germany, once a laggard in providing aid to Ukraine, announced a week ago that it planned to double its support to $8.5 billion in 2024 to deliver more crucial air-defense systems by the end of this & next year. By finally delivering on their promises, Kyiv’s European allies will find the benefits extend to them, too Jack Watling: Royal United Services Institute. Here is one fact that sums up the gap between the promises that Kyiv’s European partners have made to Ukraine....and
The reality on March 2023, EU made the historic decision to deliver a million artillery shells to Ukraine within 12 months (Is not enough). But the number that has actually been sent is closer to 300,000. For all the rhetorical commitments to support Ukraine’s defence against Russia’s invasion “for as long as it takes”, Europe has largely failed.
The price of this complacency is already being paid in Ukrainian blood. According to armed forces of Ukraine, over the summer of 2023, Ukraine was firing up to 7,000 artillery shells a day and managed to degrade Russia’s logistics and artillery to the point where Russia was firing about 5,000 rounds a day.
Today, Ukrainians are struggling to fire 2,000 rounds daily, while Russian artillery is reaching about 10,000. Artillery isn’t everything, but the disparity speaks to Ukraine’s relative shortage of materiel, evident in other areas such as the number of drones it can field.
Russia is likely to be able to fire about 5m rounds at Ukraine in 2024, based on its mobilised defence production, supply from Iran and North Korea, and remaining stocks. Despite the flippant observation – often made by European officials – that Russia’s economy is the same size as that of Italy, the Kremlin is producing more shells than all of Nato. Meanwhile, Ukraine is unlikely to see any significant increase in supply for some months. This will cede the initiative to the Russians. The Kremlin believes it can win by 2026, and so Putin is in no mood to negotiate or back down.
Next things is Ukraine stop those Russian rail trains in Russia far east from North Korea.

US intelligence earlier this month indicated that 315,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began. Russia’s human and materiel losses suffered during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine are “enormous” and its army will emerge from the war severely weakened, a German general has said. Published on Friday, Christian Freuding, who oversees German army's support for Kyiv, told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper:
“You know according to Western intelligence figures, 300,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or so seriously wounded that they can no longer be mobilized for the war....“The Russian losses of men and material are enormous,” said Freuding, who is also a key advisor to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
Russia is also believed to have lost thousands of battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, he said, adding: “The Russian armed forces will emerge from this war weakened, both materially and in terms of personnel.”
