The KMT is forever pinning their hopes in selling a "superstar". I took a quick look at some of the actions this guy has been up to and nothing impresses me so far, another typical KMT politician who is unable to lead and simply parroting what they've been doing for decades.

Now that the DPP and Tsai's heir apparent, William Lai, has successfully transformed their ideology to resemble the KMT (i.e. status quo, must recognize ROC, peaceful co-existence, interaction with CCP etc.), KMT offers nothing different at all.

The DPP, on the other hand, offers a few unique advantages for both the CCP leadership and Taiwanese voters:

1) Its current ideology is the same as KMT, so as long as the US continues to weaken the risk of independence is extremely low.
2) It is far more flexible and switches easily in response to political changes
3) It demonstrates robust thought leadership over Taiwanese voters (i.e. can convince them independence, status quo, reunification depending on whatever is needed)
4) Because of its labelling as a pro-independence party and lack of historical context in cooperating with the CCP, the Chinese government can get away with far more aggressive actions against Taiwan compared to if KMT were to rule.
5) DPP has strong central leadership and its cadres and followers are far more disciplined compared to KMT, this is very helpful during actual cross-straits negotiations and post reunification change implementation.

Personally I think both China and Taiwan will benefit from continued DPP rule and chances of a peaceful reunification and post-transition management will be better off with the DPP in charge. Other then better rhetoric and optics, KMT is a sclerotic partner that brings no value to the table.

Taiwan’s KMT rejects alliance with anti-China parties. Eric Chu wants consensus on China, constitutional reform before KMT can consider cooperating with other opposition forces. TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Kuomintang (KMT) said on Wednesday (Sept. 6) that it would not work with anti-China parties in the run-up to the next presidential election.
