Apparently, the impressive size of the trees has less to do with the trees themselves, and more to do with the environment. When removed from the environment and planted elsewhere, they just grow to their normal size. Giant land-based, submerged plants are located on faults in the Earth's crust, through which large amounts of heat and petroleum hydrocarbons can be supplied to the plant roots.
