US official confirms talks with PH on China’s fresh sea aggression
#1

A United States official confirmed ongoing talks with the Philippines following China’s recent aggression in the West Philippine Sea.

“Article IV of the 1951 U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty extends to armed attacks on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft, including those of its coast guard, anywhere in the South China Sea,” he just stated.

The Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday afternoon summoned Chinese Deputy Chief of Mission Zhou Zhiyong to convey the Philippine government’s protest against aggressive actions undertaken by China in Ayungin Shoal.

The Philippines demanded that Chinese vessels immediately vacate Ayungin Shoal.

The Philippines desperately needs US action, not talks. The way US employs various media friendly but operationally useless stalling tactics, I think it's only a matter of time before the Pinoys flip to the other side.

Yes but stir also need significant investment. For what it's worth the US did give substantial financial, diplomatic and military aid to Zelenskyy to keep the train going.

For the Philippines, all they've gotten so far are talks and photo-ops exercises. Instead of stirring on behalf of the US, Philippines has now become an exhibit for the Chinese to parade in front of ASEAN to demonstrate what happens when an ASEAN country tries to be funny.

This is not beneficial to Singapore. We need US to be around symbolically as we navigate the transition from a fast receding US led world order. By doing stupid things like this, Marcos is not only doing his own country no favors, but affecting the bargaining position of all other ASEAN states as well.

If nobody stirs, US can remain in an amorphous state for which ASEAN can draw on to sweeten any deal with the Chinese. Now that this blatant US "run road" is exposed, it makes things more difficult for us.
