Liz Cheney in Ripon, Wisconsin — the birthplace of the GOP, while former President Donald Trump holds a rally in Michigan. Both candidates are continuing to make their pitches to voters in key battleground states with less than five weeks until Election Day.

Trump’s legal woes: A new filing released Wed provides fullest picture yet of 2020 election case against Trump, outlining a special counsel Jack Smith describes as former president’s “private criminal conduct.” Track four criminal cases Trump faces while running for president here.

Oct 04, 2024While these national polls are useful for gauging overall candidate popularity, they may not accurately predict election outcomes due to U.S. electoral college system. This system allocates a total of 538 electoral college votes, with candidates needing 270 to win. Each state has a number of votes based on its population, but most states typically vote for the same party, meaning that only a few battleground states ultimately determine the election.

It a close races, one battle-tested by campaigns big and small every election. And it’s a playbook that former President Donald Trump’s campaign has tossed aside. Targeting irregular voters, teaching supporters to surveil polling places and bombarding states with voting-related lawsuits – this is machine Trump campaign has built for an election, many expect to hinge on just tens of thousands of ballots cast across 7 battleground states. It’s a gamble, Trump’s campaign internally acknowledges, one they insist is built on data they have collected over nearly a decade & tested for the past 6-months.

That & tens of mil of dollars injected lately by a super PAC aligned with tech billionaire Elon Musk, Trump’s most vocal influential supporters.

US election polls: Who's ahead - Harris or Trump?
Voters in the US go to the polls on 5 November to elect their next president.

The election was initially a rematch of 2020 but it was upended in July when President Joe Biden ended his campaign and endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris. The big question now is - will America get its first woman president or a second Donald Trump term?. As election day approaches, we'll be keeping track of the polls and seeing what effect the campaign has on the race for the White House.

Who is winning in swing state polls?
Right now, the polls are very tight in the seven states considered battlegrounds in this election with just one or two percentage points separating the candidates. That includes Pennsylvania, which is key as it has the highest number of electoral votes of the seven states and therefore winning it makes it easier to reach the 270 votes needed. In a sign of how the race has changed since Harris became the Democratic nominee, on the day Biden quit the race he was trailing Trump by nearly five percentage points on average in these seven states.

Despite Mr. Trump’s frequent false claims that mail-in voting is rife with fraud, Republicans have made efforts to encourage early voting in this election. In Pennsylvania, the party has pledged more than $10 million to persuade Republicans to vote by mail in November. But so far, the number of ballot requests made by registered Democrats in the state have far outpaced requests made by Republicans.

Harris weighs more breaks with Biden as he keeps injecting himself into the campaign. Top aides to Kamala Harris are heading into the final month of the 2024 presidential race still wrestling with how much distance she can credibly claim from Joe Biden as she looks for more ways to weave in breaks with him on the campaign trail.

She keeps getting pulled back to his side for official business @White House — as he keeps injecting himself into the conversation. Aides are looking at rolling out new plans & promises for what Harris would do as president, in part to directly demonstrate notable differences, like in her recent more blunt speeches about abortion rights & tackling the southern border. The challenge” of having so little time left in such a short race, one adviser to the vice president told CNN, is “when you’re trying to reach undecided low-intensity voters, how do you actually communicate difference with Biden?”

Running as an extension of president is not a strong position, Harris aides know, asserting what she stands for is. Neither aides in her
campaign nor Biden White House would commit to another joint campaign event between now and the election. Harris wants to create space, top aides say, but not too much space. She wants to be loyal — but she also wants to win. She is still planning to lean on Biden, who is flying to Milwaukee on Tuesday for an event trumpeting more projects made possible by admin efforts, to buck up union members or to park himself in battleground Pennsylvania for political stops in final weeks. But no one on vice president’s team is upset that Biden is headed to spend a whole week of October overseas on a non-pressing diplomatic trip to Germany & Angola. Some wish he’d go away for longer.

Meanwhile. Donald Trump’s offensive, lies, lack of plans or legal problems can shake his support.
I’ll go to my grave not understanding why know it’s a fact that this is going to be a margin-of-error race,” is Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s line voicing this sentiment on the trail.

This former president & his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, are trying to make Harris out to be the incumbent, talking as if she had been the one signing executive orders for past 3-years. The balance is tricky for a vice president squeezed between battered voters desperate for change. Republicans responding to her every proposal by asking why hasn’t implemented them already as
incumbent president whose numbers have going up with some of core constituencies she needs.

While President Biden’s and his vice-president, Harris’ (both) they has separate appearances surveying Hurricane Helene damage on Wednesday is like much of what’s to come: “singing from the same song sheet,” as Biden put it on Friday — but rarely having them side by side.

Kamala Harris has embarked on a week-long media blitz, hurtling from TV studios late-night shows to podcast interviews as she seeks to gain an edge over Donald Trump in  US election’s key battleground states remain nail-bitingly close. The vice-president’s decision to face a raft of largely friendly media outlets came as the campaigns entered the final 30 days. More than 1.4 million Americans have already cast their ballots in early voting across 30 states.

Democratic nominee’s whirlwind media tour has been carefully crafted for maximum reach and minimum risk. Harris has talked to CBS News show 60 Minutes, along with popular podcast Call Her Daddy. On Tuesday she hits media capital, New York, for appearances on ABC News’s daytime behemoth. View & Howard Stern Show, followed by a recording with late-night host Stephen Colbert. The first of a flurry of comments from Harris was put out by 60 Minutes on Sunday before a full broadcast on Monday. Harris will appear alone, after Trump declined to be interviewed by the election special which has been a staple of US election coverage for more than half a century.

In a short clip released by 60 Minutes, Harris was asked whether the Biden-Harris administration had any sway over the actions of Benjamin Netanyahu, the hardline prime minister of Israel who appears not to listen to Washington. Asked whether US had a “real close ally” in Netanyahu, she replied: “With all due respect, the better question is: do we have an important alliance between American people & the Israeli people? & the answer to that question is yes.”

But looking at trends since Harris joined the race does help highlight the states in which she seems to be in a stronger position, according to the polling averages.

In chart can see that Harris has been leading in Michigan, Pennsylvania & Wisconsin since start of August - but the margins are still small.

All three had all been Democratic strongholds before, but Trump turned them red on path to winning presidency in 2016. Then Biden retook them in 2020 & if Harris can do the same this year then she will be on course to win the election.

Hamala Harris’ visit to the border and speech outlining her economic vision captured the attention of a sizable share of Americans as September came to a close, according to new findings from The Breakthrough, a polling project that tracks how the public is following election news. But some emerging trends in the data hint at warning signs for the vice president’s campaign.

The share of Americans hearing anything at all about Harris has dropped each week since her presidential debate with former President Donald Trump in early September, and during that same time, the tone Americans use in describing what they’ve heard about her has grown more negative, reaching the lowest point of her campaign in the latest results.

Looking at what people say they have heard, read or seen about Harris, “lie” has emerged as a persistent top word that some Americans associate with her. In the latest data, it was the fourth-most mentioned word after “border,” “polls” and “campaign.” It ranked sixth in the previous week’s data and second the week of the ABC News presidential debate, after ranking no higher than 12th in earlier rounds of the survey and no higher than 20th prior to the Democratic convention in August.

As Trump delays transition process, Biden and Harris teams push forward with post-election planning. Former President Donald Trump’s team has blown past a pair of key deadlines for his presidential transition in a break from precedent that could have longterm national security ramifications.

With just over 100 days until a new president is inaugurated and less than a month until Election Day, delays in the transition planning could pose challenges for a peaceful transfer of power. In an environment of intense polarization and mistrust, Max Stier, the president and CEO of the nonprofit and nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service, starkly warned that transition activities are “optional at real risk.”

“You’re going to need to engage, and if you don’t engage, that will really put our country in jeopardy,” he said, in reference to Trump campaign has not yet entered formal transition agreements with the federal govt. Next president will face major issues at home & abroad: the aftermath of a devastating hurricane season, an escalating conflict in the Middle East and economic uncertainty aim of a presidential transition is to ensure new leadership is able to hit the ground running on day one.

No other countries in the world can attack and destroy America. This is nature’s attack on America for all the crimes, atrocities and dozens Killed Overfight, many also sufferings, they are inflicted on humanities around the U.S.. This is karmic action in Middle Tennessee Tornado.

A long-track tornadic supercell ripped across central parts of Tennessee in overnight hours early Tues. Major damage occurred in Nashville area, where a tornado tracked north of downtown between 12:30 and 1:00 am. Parts of Putnam County, just to the east, were also hit hard.

Update: At least 24 fatalities and more than 200 injuries had been reported by early Wednesday, according to weather.com. The toll includes 18 people in Putnam County, 3 in Wilson County, 2 in Davidson County (which includes Nashville) and 1 in Benton County. (The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said Tuesday afternoon 25 people had been killed statewide, but that number was later revised to 24 after one of the fatalities was determined to be not storm-related.)

City authorities in Nashville reported about 40 collapsed buildings.

The overnight tornadoes checked off several climatological boxes. When the U.S. gets tornadoes in March, they are most likely to occur across the South, albeit usually south of Middle Tennessee. Moreover, according to one analysis, a larger fraction of tornadoes occur at night in Tennessee (46%) than in any other state.

Article imagePercent of each state's tornadoes from 1950 through 2005 that occurred at night.

Last night’s tornadic supercell appears to have developed in a classic environment for late-winter and early-spring tornadoes across the South, with moderate instability but very strong vertical wind shear. Studies have shown that even modest amounts of instability can be enough to produce intense supercells and tornadoes if the shear is adequately strong.

Another March 3 tornado disaster
It’s worth comparing and contrasting this event to the deadly tornado that occurred one year ago today—March 3, 2019—in Lee County, Alabama. See the overview of this event posted here in Cat 6 last week by guest author Lee Grenci. In both the 2019 and 2020 events, a somewhat unremarkable severe set-up ramped up quickly, as a compact low intensified along a preexisting frontal zone, a pocket of unstable air moved toward it, and a long-lived tornadic supercell formed.
