U.S.A. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS 2024

Election 2024 updates: Harris and Trump gear up for 2-month sprint to finish line.

New polls show a tight race between Vice
President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump just months from Nov. 5. Neither candidate is on the trail today.

1) President Joe Biden talked up his administration's efforts to spur private investment in U.S. manufacturing this afternoon. Vice President Kamala Harris has no public events.

2( Former President Donald Trump has several campaign stops planned for later this week, including in New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

3) Second gentleman Doug Emhoff participates this evening in a Jewish Voters for Harris-Walz call.

Harris is announcing a new policy plan that her campaign said would aim to boost small business applications by expanding tax deductions for startup expenses tenfold from $5,000 to $50,000, according to a Harris campaign official, who requested anonymity to reveal details of a still-unreleased proposal. She’ll also seek to cut red tape “like wasting time and money on filing taxes or needing excessive occupational licenses across state lines to expand,” said the official.
Harris’ goal is to boost small business applications to 25 million in her first term, up from 19 million so far during the Biden administration, according to government statistics from mid-August. The Harris official said it’s “part of a concentrated strategy to take Harris’ economic agenda directly to voters on the airwaves, and to contrast it with Trump’s plans to give billionaires and big corporations a tax cut.”

The Trump campaign panned Harris' proposal.

“It’s laughable that Kamala Haris is trying to pitch herself as good for the economy when she has been a fierce advocate for Bidenomics, which is crushing small business owners,” Karoline Leavitt, a Trump campaign spokesperson, told NBC News.
“She could fix these problems right now as vice president, but she hasn’t.”

So how will Harris actually fare against Trump in November?

While independent candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr suspended his presidential campaign in August and endorsed Trump, there been no clear ripple effect as yet, with neither candidate receiving a substantial boost in support.

CNN polls across 6 battlegrounds find Georgia & Pensylvania r key toss-ups.

The 2024 presidential campaign’s home stretch kicks off with a mixed outlook across 6 key battlegrounds, new CNN polls conducted by SSRS in each state.

Vice President Kamala Harris holds an small advantage over former President Donald Trump among likely voters in Wisconsin and Michigan, Trump edge in Arizona. The two split likely voters almost evenly in Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania, the state with the largest electoral vote prize that’s widely seen as up for grabs.

Across each of them, an average of 15% of likely voters say they have not yet firmly decided their choice, suggesting a sizable share of voters could shift their views on race as attention to campaign rises and campaign activity, especially in these states, hits a fever pitch in final 9-weeks b4 Election.

Likely voters in Wisconsin break 50% for Harris to 44% for Trump, and in Michigan, it’s 48% Harris to 43% Trump. In Arizona, Trump lands at 49% to Harris’ 44%. In Georgia and Nevada, 48% back Harris & 47% for Trump. in Pennsylvania, the candidates are tied at 47%.

Findings suggest an Electoral College landscape where Pennsylvania & Georgia are central to each candidate’s path to the White House.

President Joe Biden carried all six of these states in 2020, winning Georgia by just under 12,000 votes and Arizona by a little over 10,000 votes. Were Harris to hold Biden’s 2020 wins outside of these six states & carry Wisconsin and Michigan, a win in Pennsylvania plus a single electoral vote from anywhere else would give her presidency.

Should Trump hold North Carolina – a state he carried in 2020 & is widely considered a battleground in this year’s contest – wins in Georgia and Pennsylvania would put him over the top regardless of what happens in Wisconsin, Michigan or Nevada.

In that scenario, even Arizona, where he currently holds a narrow lead, would not be necessary for Trump to win another term as president.

The candidates will debate next week in what will be their first meeting ever. The nation’s premier swing state, Pennsylvania, begins in-person absentee voting the week after. By end of month, early voting will be underway in at least 4-states with a dozen more to follow by mid-October.
The two presidential nominees are using the week before their debate to sharpen their economic messages about who could do more for the middle class. Vice President Kamala Harris discussed her policy plans on Wednesday in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, while Donald Trump will address the Economic Club of New York on Thursday.

Harris used the New Hampshire campaign stop to propose an expansion of tax incentives for small businesses, a pro-entrepreneur plan that may soften her previous calls for wealthy Americans and large corporations to pay higher taxes. Trump, meanwhile, is betting that Americans crave trillions of dollars in tax cuts — and that growth will be so fantastic that it’s not worth worrying about budget deficits.

Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign is rehashing former President Donald Trump's 2020 deal with the Taliban, as the Republican nominee has repeatedly criticized her for the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan during President Biden's first year in office.

August 26 marked three years since the Abbey Gate suicide bombing attack outside the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, which killed 13 U.S. service members, injured 18 others, and killed about 170 Afghans. During a speech in Detroit marking the day, Trump placed the blame for the "humiliation in Afghanistan" on both Harris and Mr. Biden. Big Grin X_x

Stick to policy': Voters want less drama in Harris-Trump debate

Last time US presidential candidates met, they traded barbs on stage & personal takedowns in a debate upended the 2024 campaign. President Joe Biden's performance forced him to drop out of the race. So now Kamala Harris, his replacement as Democratic nominee, will face off against former President Donald Trump in the 2nd debate on 10 September.

Event represents an opportunity for a do-over for both parties and the consensus among voters is clear: they want more policy and less political sparring.

BBC spoke to voters from across the political spectrum. Here's what seven of them are hoping to see unfold.

Trump warms up for debate by threatening to jail election officials

Donald Trump limbered up for his debate with Kamala Harris by showing the extremism that risks playing into the vice president’s claim that he’s an “unserious man” who is an “extremely serious” threat if he’s returned to the White House. He warned he will jail election officials he considers cheats; is complaining Pennsylvania’s voting is a fraud; vowed to pardon January 6 rioters; railed against women who accused him of sexual misconduct; and spent hours in recent days on sometimes incoherent rants that raised questions about his state of mind.

New polling ahead of Tuesday’s showdown in Philadelphia shows the race tied up nationally, suggesting Harris’ momentum after replacing President Joe Biden on the ticket hasn’t resulted in a commanding edge.

The tightness of the contest shows both Trump’s enduring appeal to tens of millions of Americans as he seeks a political comeback and the huge task facing Harris as she tries to save an election Democrats seemed doomed to lose before Biden bowed out.

That makes Tuesday’s debate — the first since June’s consequential clash on CNN that
eventually ended Biden’s campaign — the most critical scheduled event before Election Day.

Why Harris needs ‘super human focus facing Trump:
The way each candidate is preparing highlights the different paths Americans can choose in November and the sharp contrast in the style of the presidency that will ensue if Harris or Trump are at the Oval Office desk.

Harris and Trump to debate in pivotal campaign test. Presidential debates matter in American politics. And the one that takes place on Tuesday night between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris – their only currently scheduled face-off – may matter more than most.

Joe Biden’s poor performance in the first presidential debate in late June created a firestorm of pressure. Even though Kamala Harris has been vice-president for more than 3-years & a candidate for president for seven weeks, she is still a relative unknown for many Americans. In a recent New York Times survey, 28% of likely November voters said that they needed to know more about the Californian.

Poll showed race a statistical dead heat – a finding most recent surveys have indicated, both nationally & in key battleground states. The 2024 presidential campaign has been full of historic tumult, but the American electorate is still sharply – and narrowly - divided.

That underscores the importance of Tuesday night’s debate, where even small shifts in the mood of the electorate could be the difference between victory and defeat for the candidates.

Voters in the US go to the polls on 5 November to elect their next president. Election was initially a rematch of 2020 but upended in July when President Joe Biden ended his campaign & endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris.

The big question now is - will the result mean a second Donald Trump term or America’s first woman president?. As election day approaches, we'll be keeping track of the polls and seeing what effect big events like Tuesday’s presidential debate have on the race for the White House.

Continue from above.... Big Grin While these national polls are a useful guide as to how popular a candidate is across the country as a whole, they're not necessarily an accurate way to predict the result of the election.

That's b'cos US uses an electoral college system to elect its president, so winning the most votes can be less important than where they are won.

There are 50 states in US but be'cos most of them nearly always vote for same party, in reality there are just a handful where both candidates stand a chance of winning. These are the places where the election will be won and lost and are known as battleground states.
