For the Republican, U.S. is a hellscape of rising crime, unchecked immigration & economic misery. For Democrat, nation is beset by division, he has sowed, the abortion bans ushered in, & economic policies he passed favor rich at expense of e rest. But beyond canned salvos campaign boilerplate.
The high-stakes clash underscored dramatically the presidential race has changed since mid-summer, when even top Democrats conceded Trump appeared to be sailing to victory in his rematch with President Joe Biden. As plain as it is that Trump wishes, he it is equally apparent Harris has rattled him.

By split-screen said it all: Trump glowered & grimaced, spewing old grievances strange new, he repeated a baseless Internet rumor on migrant invaders. In Ohio, he  claimed that Harris “wants to do transgender operations on illegal aliens in prison.” With sharp ripostes canny traps, Harris baited Trump into boasting about his crowd sizes, grousing 2020 standing up for rioters attacked U.S. Capitol thwart & peaceful to transfer power. In 9-years since Trump first burst onto scene, no opponent—Democrat or Republican—has with 800-lb. gorilla of American politics as coolly, or gotten under his skin to such a degree.

Trump in Trouble Time Magazine cover
Illustration by Tim O’Brien for TIME. How it’s going for Trump now. Despite he speculation that Harris was poised to replace Biden at the top of the ticket, he & his campaign were caught flat-footed, left lurching from one attack line to another. He top aides thought to settled on a strategy, only to see himself upend it on the fly.  Closeer to he, level of campaign infighting & backstabbing rivaled in 2016 op. (A infamous snake pit). Facing a new opponent, he reverted to his old ways. In matter of weeks, he frittered away his commanding position.

Harris’ smooth debut galvanized the Democratic base and unlocked a fundraising behemoth that dwarfed that of Trump and his allies. In the handful of pivotal swing states, her campaign is building on formidable operations she inherited from Biden, and boasts a striking advantage in cash and reserved ad time between now and Election Day. “I think everyone was caught off guard by the way it shifted so dramatically,” says a person close to Trump.

Race remains deadlocked.

Trump posts ‘I hate Taylor Swift,’ days after the star’s Harris endorsement

In all caps, the Republican presidential nominee took to Truth Social on Sunday to rage against the singer with 284 million Instagram followers.

Former president Donald Trump took his bitterness over mega-pop star Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris to his social network, declaring in an all-caps tweet on Truth Social on Sunday, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” The post did not mention Swift’s endorsement following Tuesday’s presidential debate, but Trump’s comment risks angering Swift’s legions of fans.

Within 15 hours of her endorsement of Harris, Swift’s much-anticipated announcement drove about 338,000 visits to Vote.gov, the federal voter registration site the singer linked to on an Instagram Story post. It is unclear how many of her fans registered to vote.

Swift broke her silence on the presidential election minutes after the end of Tuesday’s widely watched debate between Trump and Harris, with Harris the victor in most polls. Swift announced that she planned to vote for the vice president in a lengthy Instagram post signed, “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady,” a reference to past comments by Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance (Ohio), that the country was led by a “bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made.” The comments have reverberated with bipartisan backlash for weeks.

Harris soars to record 6-point lead over Trump in post-debate poll me Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris during a campaign rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, earlier this month.

Vice President Kamala Harris leapt to a six-point lead over former President Trump in the wake of last week's presidential debate, according to a Morning Consult poll published Tuesday.

Why it matters: Most polls before last Tuesday's debate that saw Harris rattle Trump on a range of topics had the pair locked in a virtual dead heat.
"A majority of likely voters — including 1 in 5 Republicans — believe Harris won the debate, and performance appears to be crystalizing her national lead over the former president," said Eli Yokley, political analyst at Morning Consult, in an emailed statement.

Trump and Harris' views on inflation, according to their records and what they've said. Latest
September 18, 2024. Inflation is consistently a top issue ahead of the 2024 presidential election — in CBS News' polling in mid-August, 76% of registered voters said it was a major factor in their choice for president — and they want to know how nominees Donald Trump and Kamala Harris would address it.

Inflation — the rate of an increase in the price of goods and services over time — has hollowed out many voters' wallets and made it tougher for Americans to save. According to the Federal Reserve, inflation averaged 1.9% a year from 2017 to 2021 when Trump was president.

Rallying supporters in two battleground states, Vice President Kamala Harris signaled on Friday that her closing campaign message would focus on the life-or-death risks that abortion bans pose to American women — and on the argument that former President Donald J. Trump is to blame.

In Madison, Wis., a crowd that had been ebullient suddenly grew hushed as Ms. Harris spoke about her visit with the family of a Georgia woman who died of sepsis after waiting for more than 20 hours for medical care to treat an incomplete medication abortion.

“She was a vibrant 28-year-old,” Ms. Harris said. “Her name, Amber Nicole Thurman, and I promised her mother I would say her name every time.”

Earlier in the day, Ms. Harris traveled to Georgia, where Ms. Thurman and another woman, Candi Miller, died after delays in medical care tied to state abortion restrictions, according to reporting by ProPublica.

Their deaths occurred in the months after Georgia passed a six-week ban made possible by the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
