The writer isn't wrong from both China's and US's perspective. Taiwanese do come across as a bunch of strawberries demanding everyone to give them the best of both worlds and respect their "freedom" and "will of the people" to do whatever they like.

From US they want a firm commitment to protect them militarily and yet show no interest in taking arms to defend themselves as seen from their atrocious scandal ridden armed forces and withering enlistment rates. From China they want economic benefits and yet make no offer to move towards meeting China's political demands. Again "respecting the Taiwanese people" is used as an excuse to yet grab the goodies while offering nothing.

This all works when China was the weaker party in East Asia compared to US. China had no choice but to offer one sided economic giveaways to try and discourage any Taiwanese intentions to go independent. The same goes for US - the chances of going to an actual war with China is small while the likelihood of prevailing in such a war even if it happens is high due to extreme US military superiority. In addition, globalization was in full swing and nobody wanted to rock the boat, thus allowing TSMC to play a critical role in the semicon global supply chain in Taiwan.

Now things have changed. China likely has a military advantage in the event of a war with US in the Taiwan straits and so far US has failed to put down China in a trade war and seem to struggle even when trying to sanction economic midget Russia. This has completely upset the previous dynamics that allowed Taiwan to punk around between the G2.

China has no reason to continue a one sided economic strategy to please the Taiwanese while the US sees no reason to sacrifice blood and treasure to fight a war it is unlikely to prevail especially when it sees such a lethargic Taiwan population that has every intention to surrender and bolt the moment things get hot. The deglobalization taking place has also ironically brought a meeting of minds between China and US that TSMC is a risk to national security and needs to be taken down A.S.A.P, so this negotiation chip that Taiwanese fantasize will be the deal maker to dance around the G2 is also losing its allure.
