Now why would the USA send an old aircraft carrier, which is due to be retired soon, right smacked into a conflict zone within Iranian missile range?

One reason is that the last aircraft carrier sent to the Middle East, the USS Truman, is not fit for combat after what happened with the Houthis

So, this further lends credibility to the suggestions that the Truman got a beating by the Houthis

The USS Liberty incident occurred on June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War, when Israeli forces attacked a U.S. Navy ship in international waters, killing 34 and injuring 171. Israel claimed it was a mistake, believing the ship was Egyptian, and both U.S. and Israeli inquiries supported this, citing communication failures. However, some survivors and officials, like Captain Ward Boston, argue it was deliberate, pointing to the attack’s intensity, jammed radios, and recalled U.S. rescue aircraft. Theories suggest Israel aimed to hide military plans or draw the U.S. into the war, but no declassified evidence confirms this. The debate remains unresolved, with credible arguments on both sides.

Speculation now is that maybe US is sending an excuse for Israel to fake an Iranian attack on USS Nimitz (similar to the 1967 incident above) so that US can enter the war.
