Moscow, after all, had spent billions of dollars upgrading the armed forces’ weapons? and systems, reorganizing their structure?, and developing new attack plans?.

The Russian military had then proved its worth by winning battles in small states, including during its invasion of Georgia and its air campaign in Syria.

Experts believed that Ukraine is their next attacked by Russia. Russia would quickly overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses and launch a sweeping ground campaign rapidly envelop Kyiv. They thought that Russia would shatter Ukraine’s supply lines and isolate most of the country’s forces.

Ukraine’s inability to resist this onslaught appeared so obvious that some analysts suggested Kyiv might not be worth arming for a interstate war.

This is Putin cake for Russian. But is not... Wilted_rose

Ukraine Faces $40B, Decades-Long Battle With Unexploded Russian Mines. "It's the heaviest landmine and UXO contamination we've seen in Europe since World War II," Mike Newton, the head of Europe for the HALO Trust mine clearing NGO, told Newsweek. "Last year we were able to draw comparisons with Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia, in the Western Balkans. But now, without a shadow of a doubt, it's the worst in Europe since World War II, and potentially even the greatest in the world."

Ukrainian govt has identified about 170,000 square kilometers some 67,180 square miles of potentially contaminated land. Since war on Kyiv be Putin.

Ukraine. "We will definitely create a reliable ‘air shield’ over Ukraine, which can become the basis of the ‘air shield’ throughout Europe,"

Zelensky noted that Ukraine does not yet have sufficient air defense capabilities that would allow for protecting the sky from Russian attacks over the entire territory of the country.

According to the head of state, the country's leadership works daily with international partners to ensure that the required capabilities are provided to Ukraine. "We keep convincing our partners that the pace of delivery of what we agreed upon is a key factor," Zelensky added.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, on the first Sunday of August, Ukraine celebrates its Air Force Day.

For info reading (fyi): News from Ukraine folks.

Officially, there were limited on-the-ground developments across the 1,000-kilometer front of Russia’s war on Ukraine. Unofficially, there may be more going on than spokespersons are saying along the islands of the Dnipro River. In the meantime, Russia slaughtered Ukrainian civilians with repeat missile attacks – and the Ukrainians took another Russian combat assault helicopter out of the sky on the southern front.

Analysis

Former NATO Supreme Commander Philip Breedlove said: “Ukraine is waging a war that it is used to waging; perhaps, they have not fully embraced the war of maneuver that we would like them to wage. But remember that maneuver warfare requires certain things, including air superiority over the battlefield. This is what we did not provide to Ukraine. We haven’t given them the opportunity to establish air superiority on the battlefield, so they adapt what they’ve learned to the battlefield in front of them. I think we should let them fight the way they hope to do best.”

Despite grave concerns and Western cynicism, the Ukrainian Air Force has not only survived during Russia’s full-scale invasion, but successfully reconfigured itself, including by retro-fitting old Soviet-era bombers with high-tech Western weaponry. Here’s an in-depth analysis by military expert David Axe in Forbes.

General Developments --- At least 7 people have been killed and more than 60 injured by a Russian repeat missile attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, including in what President Zelensky described as “an ordinary residential building.

Pokrovsk lies 70 kilometers north-west of the city of Donetsk, held by Russia, and 50 kilometers from the frontline. Many were hurt when Russian forces hit the site a 2nd time as rescue operations were underway – with 19 police and rescue workers among the injured.

Pitin / Russian ‘Double-Strike Kills at Least Seven, Injures 36 Emergency Services Workers

Moscow’s brutal (Cow's) deliberate waiting until rescuers reach the scene then striking again is well-documented both in Ukraine and Syria.

Zelensky acknowledged in an interview published on August 6 with Argentine news outlet La Nacion that the tempo of counteroffensive operations is slower than expected and stated that patience is necessary in order for Ukraine to win,

ISW reported: Ukrainian forces are in the offensive phase of operations and continue to hold more ground and initiative.
