What does meritocracy mean in S'pore?
#1

Our Govt talks a lot about meritocracy  A meritocracy is a social system where people receive status or rewards based on what they achieve, and not because of their wealth or social status. So is meritocracy practiced when all 3 children of Lee Kuan Yew become President’s Scholars, and the 2 sons obtain SAF scholarships with 1 becoming Prime Minister?  Is it meritocracy when S'pore’s PM is married to the most powerful woman – Ho Ching when she was the former CEO of Temasek? Is meritocracy at play when former President Tony Tan’s son Patrick and daughter Patricia became President’s Scholars? Patrick was granted an unheard-of 12 years’ disruption from NS to complete further studies, and eventually served in the specially created post of medical researcher.

Is meritocracy practiced when SAF Generals with zero private sector experience and zero industry experience are appointed CEOs of SMRT? Is meritocracy at play when Generals and SAF Scholars are systematically inducted into the top echelons of the govt and govt-linked corporations? Lee Hsien Loong, Teo Chee Hean, Chan Chun Sing, Tan Chuan-Jin, Ng Chee Meng, Ng Chee Kern, Ng Chee Peng, Neo Kian Hong and Ng Yat Chung are included in that list.

Meritocracy may even be reinterpreted – the Elected Presidency becomes reserved for Malay candidates only; and only 1 candidate (based on merit) qualifies and automatically becomes President. The selected President may even be an Indian woman who is miraculously transformed into a Malay!

Sg is Elitism not meritocracy lah
Dont be misled by current team.

If Sg is a meritocracy society, the best ppl will now be serving the nation irregardless whether he/she from which place he/she comes from or party.

Hiring close allies may give the impression that the PM/ruling party is weak and requires a network of supporters to strengthen their position. Cronyism casts aspersions on a leader’s judgment and ethics when Ministers/MPs lack the requisite skills, knowledge and experience, which will become apparent over time.

Instead of the best man (or woman) for the job, it is always the best friend.
