Why are There 3 MRT Lines to the East While West, NW, North or NE only has 1 Line?

I guess the 2nd NE line will be the Seletar line while the 3rd westward line will be the Holland line.
But hope these will not be so soon cause it will mean Spore will be near to the 10mln population.
COE then could be double the amount now which means more inflation for the masses!
And much lousier air quality too then. Even now, I find the air to be extremely dirty - full of dust and soot.
