Young Singapore 2-B PM is here to welcome all & very one

SINGAPORE: This year’s General Election results sent a “strong signal” to the world of Singapore’s unity and collective resolve; and moving forward, S'poreans must be clear-eyed about the challenges that lie ahead, said President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for Singapore’s new Cabinet on Friday (May 23), Mr Tharman said S'poreans were ultimately the winners in the election. Together, we have set the course for our next phase of nation building, he said.

But the world has entered “uncharted waters”, with deepening rivalries between major powers, a fragmenting global economy and the erosion of multilateralism. Narrower, more nationalistic and opportunistic approaches to trade and diplomacy are taking hold, Mr Tharman said to more than 600 guests who gathered at the Istana lawn for the ceremony. Being a small state, S'pore will feel the weight of these geopolitical changes in a greater way, as the stable, rules-based international order unravels.

The country will be forced to adapt & find new ways to remain in control of our destiny, & hold together as a people. There is no telling whether this global disorder will eventually subside, there is no returning to world we knew over our first 60 years of nationhood.

A biggest surprise of PM Lawrence Wong’s announcement of his new Cabinet on May 21 was, without doubt, his decision not to appoint 2nd deputy pm since S'pore has by custom had two DPMs since 1980s. Alongside retention of experienced ministers in core portfolios such as finance, home affairs, foreign affairs and trade & industry, it first blush look like leadership renewal this time has mainly been at more junior levels, due to gaps left by departing 3 heavyweight ministers Mr Teo Chee Hean, Mr Heng Swee Keat and Dr Ng Eng Hen. For instance, Dr Ng’s retirement is the basis for four of the seven changes being made at the minister level, with Mr Chan Chun Sing taking over as Minister for Defence. In turn, the Education portfolio will be taken up by Mr Desmond Lee, which opens National Development to be helmed by Mr Chee Hong Tat, who was in charge of Transport. Political newcomer Jeffrey Siow is slated to take on the Transport portfolio as Acting Minister.

Setting aside question (?) of 2nd DPM for this moment, continuity belies the breadth of changes being made to the PAP’s governing team will see leadership overhauls across every ministry. Nine new office-holders were appointed on May 21 – the highest in recent history – comprising seven new MPs and two promotions from the backbench. In explaining how he arrived at his Cabinet line-up, PM Wong said a team comprises both experienced hands & younger ministers would be the strongest one for as S'pore enters a new phase marked by greater uncertainty. A world with rising trade barriers and sharper competition necessitates due to Sao Trump having a hand on tariff. Is go to had old hands at the ministries leading S'pore’s economic agenda, he said, include Ministry of Finance, remains under PM Wong, & the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), under Deputy PM Gan Kim Yong.

A more uncertain world would also require experienced ministers at the helm of Singapore’s foreign policy and security agencies, said PM Wong, that why Dr Vivian Balakrishnan continue as Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while Mr K. The leaders will reaffirm their commitment to ASEAN’s integration and community building efforts, as well as discuss ways to continue promoting “a free, open and inclusive regional architecture” within the 10-member bloc and with external partners, it added.

The two-day ASEAN summit is taking place amid an increasingly uncertain global economic and trade environment upended by United States SAO  Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs.

Many of Southeast Asia’s trade -dependent economies were slapped with some of the harshest tariff rates first announced on Apr 2. These so-called  “reciprocal tariffs” have been paused for 90 days since Apr 9, but the threat of economic upheaval still looms over the region, like on ASEAN.

ASEAN has reaffirmed commitment to stand by the principles of multilateralism and a rules-based global trading order, even as it continues to maintain a policy of non-retaliation against the US tariffs, Tengku Zafrul said.

SINGAPORE – People’s Action Party MPs should take ownership of causes or issues that they feel strongly about and champion them with conviction, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on May 29. In an eight-page “rules of prudence” letter traditionally issued to PAP MPs after each general election, he said effective advocacy of causes – whether they reflect constituents’ aspirations or broader national concerns – goes beyond speaking up. “You have to research the issues thoroughly, engage diverse stakeholders, understand the trade-offs, and present well-reasoned arguments for improving policies,” he said in the letter on how the ruling party MPs should conduct themselves.

This was PM Wong’s first such letter, as the recent general election was his first as Prime Minister and secretary-general of the PAP. The PAP won 87 out of 97 seats and 65.57 per cent of the vote. The
broad strokes of PM Wong’s letter remained similar to previous letter issued by then PM Lee Hsien Loong in 2020, with both emphasising the importance of integrity, honesty and incorruptibility as core to the PAP. PM Wong said PAP MPs would have their first opportunity to speak in Parliament during debate on the President’s Address at opening of Parliament. He did not specify when Parliament would reopen.

Other opportunities include Budget debate & subsequent debates on each ministry’s budget. “Make every opportunity count. Prepare your speeches carefully & deliver them clearly. This will help your audience & the media to grasp your points effectively,” he said. PM Wong also repeated the call for PAP MPs to be ready for sharper questioning and debate in Parliament. Party’s MPs should be prepared to engage opposition, must exercise good judgment when putting points across & should not get carried away playing to the gallery, he said. He also stressed that PAP MPs should put across their points with clarity and purpose, and should “address the issues and not the person”.

There will be 12 Workers’ Party opposition MPs in the new 15th term of Parliament, including two Non-Constituency MPs. PM Wong also addressed the use of social media by MPs, a section that Senior Minister Lee had added in his 2020 letter. He noted that social media has become a key channel for communication, and a primary source of news for many.
“You should embrace social media, and make full use of the different platforms, to let the public know about your work, share your views, and engage residents directly,” PM Wong said, adding that MPs should not use the platforms to attack or disparage others. In the rest of the letter, PM Wong reiterated points been made in previous years, including need for PAP MPs to uphold the party’s reputation for clean govt. He also added that MPs need to engage public servants respectfully at all times. “Never pressure them or seek to bypass proper processes.”

He reminded MPs of the “social lubricants” that individuals may use to ingratiate themselves with MPs, adding concert tickets to the list that included gift hampers on festive occasions, dinners and entertainment as well as personal favours. “You must be shrewd in assessing the motives of people who seek to get close to you. Both in conduct and perception, you must stand above any hint of favour or influence,” other reminders he included in his letter covered separating business & politics, conduct in Parliament, gifts and fund raising, as well as financial prudence and directorships. PAP MPs must always conduct themselves with modesty, decorum and dignity, he emphasised.
“In this internet age, you will always be in the public eye,”“yes must win respect, not popularity, to stay the course.”

Scientists had successfully teleported light for first time.

Scientists have studied phenomenon for decades, analyzing behavior of photons, electrons,& other particles that make up the universe. Meanwhile, engineers have been working outside the study room & recently made a major discovery about photons. Researchers from University of Tennessee, EPB of Chattanooga, and the Dept of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Lab managed to maintain a quantum entanglement between pairs of photons for over 30 uninterrupted hours. How in order to make this achievement even a more impressive real-world applications, scientists used an optic fiber network.

What makes discovery so impactful?
A quantum entanglement is a connection between two or more particles means whatever happens to one, it instantly matches the other, no matter how far apart they are – Einstein referred to this as “spooky action at a distance” because nothing behaves like this in nature. How connection between two photons can be fragile, and it can be broken. To maintain stability signal scientists used a system automatically adjusts way photons are spinning as they travel, technique, called in direction that might happen along the way, reinforcing the connection of the photons in the quantum entanglement by minimizing the disruptions caused by the environment that might interfere with the signal. The uninterrupted signal shared between the 3 institutes – all located in Chattanooga, Tennessee – traveled only about half a mile.

What makes discovery so impactful?
How long 2 photons can still maintain quantum connection is next for the scientists to work out come soon or later, in their brain & mind.

A stable quantum connection between photons — and the researchers’ ability to bring it into the real world — could lay the foundation for a future where info travels faster & farther than anything we’ve seen before. While we’d still rely on speed of light to send a message or beam across space, quantum entanglement could allow receiving side to get the signal instantly, without waiting millions of years for it to arrive.
