1. I have served the nation in a combat unit for 2.5 + 10 years. I had fulfilled my duty as a citizen, but has the country do it's part for me?

Yes, Shanghai is a nice place to go to.  From there, you can spin to all over China on domestic flights but for the expereince...no harm taking the trains (high speed, normal, all kinds...no need to hurry and rush), or even a long distance coach.

The water towns are nice to visit.

Three Gorges too.

And many more places...

If your chewren are grown up, it may be a good time for you and your wife to go for another honeymoon.
