All 29 Barisan Nasional MPs except Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi are believed to have signed statutory declarations (SDs) backing Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.

This was facilitated by Sembrong Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein on Sunday night (Nov 20), Utusan Malaysia reported

GPS has agreed to form a govt together with Perikatan Nasional (PN), BN, and Sabah's GRS,

Sarawak Premier. Abang Johari Openg announced today. GPS has 22 seats and combined with all others, PN will have 131 seats in Parliament, more than enough to form a government.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 --- Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional leaders have begun arriving at the Seri Pacific Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, confirming rumours of a meeting that first surfaced late last night.

Among the faces who ran the gauntlet of the media scrum were Barisan Nasional leaders such as Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong.

Also seen entering the building were PKR’s Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Amanah president Mohmad Sabu from Pakatan Harapan.

Most when queried refused to divulge the purpose of the meeting, merely saying that they had received a letter requesting their presence at a meeting in their capacity as one of 30 BN MPs, as Wee could be heard saying in a ‘live’ telecast

THE Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) takes exception to the call by the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun, for party leaders to submit statutory declarations (SDs) from MPs who are willing to support to a PM candidate to form the new government.

The Speaker should know that the use of SDs for the formation of government has been proven to be a failure again and again, contributing to much instability over the years.

A parliamentary government is a government based on a common governance programme, not a bunch of individual MPs supporting a common PM candidate, whether or not in exchange for positions.

It is unreasonable that party leaders are rushed into deals before all their MPs have the chance to deliberate and be heard. No timeline should be set for this important process.

The most important goal in this process is to ensure that a sustainable and stable government can be formed and this can only be achieved through a carefully negotiated agreement among the parties, and it should not be hastily rushed through using SDs.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding for Political Stability and Transformation in Parliament by the government of Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob with Opposition bloc Pakatan Harapan in September 2021 that restored political stability should be emulated in the current situation, and enough time should be given to all parties to deliberate matters.

It is better to be slow and steady in establishing a stable government than to rush and risk sending our nation into endless political machinations over the next few years.

Take the bank with you wherever you go
Malaysia badly needs a functioning government to prevail over the triple crises of economy, environment and pandemic, not one plagued by intense infighting among government partners. All quarters should always act prudently and responsibly to protect our parliamentary democracy and Constitutional monarchy.
