Lithuania has recklessly violated the One China principle, a basic norm of international relations and a universal consensus held by the international community, a move destined to be spurned and opposed, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told reporters on Monday.

Now, there are rising complaints among Lithuanian exporters that their cheese, grain, beer, wood and other items are no longer on China's shopping list, according to local media reports.

Lithuania's auto part sector has also lately been in the limelight amid concerns that local automotive supply chains, might take a battering too. German car parts giant Continental is being asked to halt using components made in Lithuania, Reuters reported on Friday.

Two developments in the Lithuania saga surprised me.

Firstly, I thought the US and EU would at least show perfunctory verbal support to Lithuania after it got hit by China even if real tangible help is limited. From the looks of things, US and EU are not even bothering to pretend to care about her. At least Taiwan got plenty of support in the form of joint statements, press releases and interviews, poor Lithuania has basically been totally abandoned - all Lithuania got was a cursory nod that EU stands with her in the WTO suit followed by a dismissal. WTO arbitration panel is not even functioning now, that's a total non-answer.

Secondly, I was under the impression that there was little China could do as trade between both countries was limited and even if totally embargoed, the economical impact to Lithuania is negligible. What I did not anticipate was China demanding that all companies that trade with China remove Lithuania companies from its supply chain. That’s basically the purview of US Section 301 investigations and looks like China is intent to learning from US on this.

Even more amazingly, none of the EU and US companies are putting up any real resistance and keeping very quiet. Looks like their strategy is to subtly remove Lithuania in order to please China and yet not create a ruckus. Even the rational Politico news channel is getting exasperated with the total lack of support from EU https://www.politico.eu/article/china-tr...rlessness/ But then Politico only knows how to scold EU, but don't dare to mention how come US is missing in action as well.
