Just 13 per cent of Lithuanians support Vilnius’ hardline policy toward China, according to a government poll that adds to the pressure mounting on its foreign ministry.

In a survey conducted by a private company on behalf of the ministry, just 1 per cent of respondents rated Lithuania’s “value-based” policy towards China “very positively”, with 12 per cent viewing it “positively”.

Conversely, 21 per cent said they felt “very negatively” and 37 per cent “negatively” about a policy that has seen Vilnius bolster its ties with Taiwan, the self-governed island that Beijing views as a renegade province.

Therein lies the fundamental problem with EU. They like to sell to the trio (US/CN/RU) the idea that they are a European community not to be trifled with in all sorts of geopolitical topics, but whenever any of the trio turns around and whacks them hard, it becomes every country for itself and the whole "Europe" shtick collapses.

It is becoming clear that both US and CN have their preferred EU buddies to stir shiit and give the EU a slap whenever they try to be funny. US common buddies include Lithuania, Estonia and Poland. CN buddies include Greece and Hungary. The Russians are weaker and generally have no EU buddies, but they try to leverage on their energy position to scare EU into capitulating.

The three strongest EU nations Germany, France and Italy cannot even see eye to eye on many major issues, so I really don't think they are going to amount to much on the global sphere in the future. They are fast becoming like Japan, mostly rich and comfortable, but powerless to participate in global leadership. UK is even further down the road to "Japanization" but the politicians there are going around to thrash talk in a desperate effort to shore up their position.

Lithuania is not poor. It is the 39th richest country in the World with a GDP-PPP of 42,000, much higher than many ASEAN countries and also China which is in the 75th position in this ranking list.
