Read a version of this story in Korean.
Around 50 North Korean soldiers were killed in a battle against Ukrainian army drones in the Kursk region this week, video of the battle shared on social media revealed. It’s the latest evidence that North Korean forces are participating in Russia’s war with Ukraine, a fact that Moscow and Pyongyang are trying to hide, including by allegedly burning the faces off of North Koreans who are killed in action.

Sgt video he watch believed to be North Korean soldiers are seen running away or hiding behind trees when they encounter Ukrainian first-person-view drones, also known as FPV drones.

Sgt. Mykhailo Makaruk, a member of the Ukrainian unit confirmed to RFA Korean that he had fought against North Koreans in battle captured on video.
“I think nearly 200 (North Korean soldiers) came to our position,” Makaruk said, explaining that shortly after, the drones began an aerial attack.
He said, they are likened North Koreans to zombies, a staple of horror films.

“They came and they came and more drones are bombing them,” he said. “I don’t understand how they can come to this war. They look like, you know, real zombies.” Sick Bigeyes Opasnie-1

U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking to have Ukraine supply U.S. with rare earths as a condition for aid for the war-torn country. We're looking to do a deal with Ukraine, they're giving them rare earths & with security of rare earths. We're putting in hundreds of billions of dollars. They have great rare earths. And I want security of the rare earths, and they're willing to do it.

A spokesman said it was likely they had pulled out after suffering heavy losses.
Last week, Western officials told the BBC that, out of some 11,000 troops sent from North Korea to fight for Russia, 1,000 had been killed in just three months.

North Korea and Russia have not commented.

North Korea is believed to be preparing to send another group of soldiers to come to Vladimir Putin’s aid in the war in Ukraine, despite heavy combat losses already suffered by troops from the east Asian country.

When Ukrainian forces crossed border into the Kursk region of Russia in August 2024, Ukraine’s military commanders hoped their surprise move would force Moscow to withdraw troops from eastern Ukraine to defend Russia’s own territory. Kyiv did not expect its troops to end up fighting North Koreans. Neither Moscow nor Pyongyang have officially confirmed North Korean troops are fighting side by side with Russians.

But South Korean intelligence has been reporting on their presence since October 2024, when approximately 1,500 North Korean special forces were observed to have arrived in Russia’s far eastern city of Vladivostok, initially for training.
This group was later joined by another 10,000 or so of their comrades (some of whom believed to be from North Korean special forces units). They were transported nearly 7,000 kilometres across Russia to reach combat zone.

North Korean soldiers were first spotted fighting in the Kursk region alongside Russian forces in early December, according to the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky. By mid-January more than 40% of the North Koreans are believed to have been killed, injured, missing or captured – with as many as 1,000 thought to have been killed. There are some reports that North Korean troops are now being pulled by from the front lines due to those losses, potentially for extra training.

North Korea, an isolated dictatorship with few allies, is one of Russia’s most reliable suppliers of weapons, including missiles and millions of rounds of ammunition that Russia needs to continue to fight its war against Ukraine. North Korea, however, would seem to have little reason to send its own people to risk their lives in that conflict. The North Korean soldiers appear to be at @heart of a deal struck by North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un and Russian mas president Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine war briefing: Putin admits situation ‘very difficult’ in Kursk as Kyiv forces mount new offensive. Moscow shows ‘indifference’ to civilian humanitarian corridor offer, says Zelenskyy; France delivers Mirage jets know on day 1,080.
Ukraine’s president Zelenskyy, on Thursday praised his troops for Kursk offensive, issued several army units with state honours. “Occupier can & should be beaten on its territory. Kursk op clearly explains the meaning of the principle of ‘peace through strength’.”

Russia said it was battling a new Ukrainian offensive in Kursk, as Kyiv offered a humanitarian corridor for civilians in the Russian region it has invaded and partly occupied, and the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, admitted the situation there was “very difficult” as he met with regional governors. The Russian defence ministry said Ukraine deployed two mechanised battalions, tanks and armoured vehicles about 10 kilometres (six miles) from the border to the south-east of the Ukrainian-controlled town of Sudzha. There was no comment on the fresh offensive from officials in Kyiv, and Russian statements on the extent of any fighting could not be verified.

As U.S. aid to Ukraine was drying up, Trump had made public his desire to get a hold of Ukraine’s rare earth minerals in return for a new influx of American support, idea of trading Ukrainian raw resources in exchange for aid was seen as a favorable scenario by Kyiv, desperate to keep the flow of military hardware into country. Yet, the unilateral claim by Trump didn’t sit well with European counterparts, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling Trump’s statement "very egoistic, very self-centered." While in Kyiv on Feb. 5, Saint-Martin selected grants for reconstruction projects in the fields of health, infrastructure, energy, demining and agriculture that would benefit from the €200 million grant fund and spoke with the Kyiv Independent about rebuilding Ukraine, extraction of rare earth minerals in the country, and a potential trade war between Kyiv’s closest allies.

So First French Mirage fighter jets reportedly arrive in Ukraine — here’s what they can do.
Kyiv Independent: Mr. Saint-Martin, can you please summarize your visit?.

Laurent Saint-Martin: My role as foreign trade minister has a dual purpose. The first is to reaffirm France’s support for Ukraine in a complex global context — military, diplomatic, but also economic and commercial support.

The second goal is to show that France and Europe continue to support Ukraine in mutual economic projects, benefiting both France and the European Union, and Ukraine by developing joint investment projects.

Kyiv Independent: You mention a dual interest, particularly in a context where Donald Trump conditions American aid on commercial profits he could benefit from here, in Ukraine. How can we ensure Ukraine benefits from this as well?

However, it increasingly came under the influence of initial stages of the breakup of Yugoslavia,. However, it increasingly came under the influence of Slobodan Milošević, whose govt invoked Serbian nationalism as an ideological replacement for the weakening communist system. As a result, the JNA began to lose Slovenes, Croats, Kosovar Albanians, Bosniaks, and Macedonians, & effectively became a fighting force of only Serbs and Montenegrins. According to a 1994 report by the UN, the Serb side did not aim to restore Yugoslavia; instead, it aimed to create a "Greater Serbia" from parts of Croatia and Bosnia. Other irredentist movements have also been brought into connection with the Yugoslav Wars, such as "Greater Albania" (from Kosovo, idea abandoned following international diplomacy) and "Greater Croatia" (from parts of Herzegovina, abandoned in 1994 with the Washington Agreement).

KYIV - Ukraine's Defence Ministry launched a recruitment drive for young people on Feb 11, encouraging 18- to 24-year-olds to serve in the military for a year for the equivalent of about US$24,000 (S$32,486) and hefty bonuses.

With Ukraine's armed forces heavily outnumbered by their Russian adversaries on the front lines of the nearly three-year-old war, President Volodymyr Zelensky told Reuters last week the recruitment drive was about to be launched.
Under pressure to bring more soldiers into the military, Ukraine's Parliament in 2024 approved a new law on mobilisation reducing the draft age from 27 to 25 and providing for penalties for anyone avoiding the call-up.
