US-backed Syrian Kurds seize eastern city of Deir el-Zor

A convoy’s arrival is expected to represent an enduring shift from control by the SNA. Whether change would also result in Kurds who fled Afrin in 2018, when Turkey invasion returning to the region. The deployment appears to have been greeted with support by locals commentators who follow developments has also led to expectations among eastern Syria media organizations close to Syrian Democratic Forces, back by U.S. as Damascus will send an official delegation to Afrin to standardize its authority. Ahmed Hassan, head of the local branch of the Kurdish National Council in Afrin, told Rudaw

Media Network on February 6 that he “has not been officially informed that power in Afrin and its surroundings will be transferred to the General Security of Damascus govt control].”Today’s developments follow years of uncertainty in the region. In Jan 2018, Turkey target Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) military op in Afrin. At the time, Afrin was run by Syrian People’s Defense Units (YPG), who linked to PKK. Ankara backed Syrian Nat Army, a collection of Syrian rebel to take over Afrin in the wake of the fighting. Since then, Afrin has been subjected to infighting among SNA factions & experienced significant demographic changes as people displaced from other areas of Syria moved there. “The number of displaced has led to unprecedented population explosion in Afrin,” recently. Many of displaced individuals who moved to Afrin are Arabs, many who fled in 2018 were Kurds have demanded to return to the area, according to reports by the Kurdish Hawar News Agency (ANHA).

Damascus’s entry into Afrin follows high-profile trips by Syrian President Ahmed Sharaa to Saudi Arabia & Turkey, as well as a phone call between Sharaa to French President Emmanuel Macron on February 5. It is unclear if visit to Turkey and the call with Macron are linked to new deployment in northwest Syria, or if deployment presage similar movements into other areas run by the SNA.

A delegation of Russian officials has arrived in Damascus on the first such visit since Syria’s longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad was toppled by opposition fighters. Al-Assad, a close ally of Moscow, sought refuge in Russia in Dec following a lightning offensive by opposition groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov & Alexander Lavrentyev, the Russian president’s special envoy for Syria, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported on Tuesday.

A delegation of Russian officials arrived in Damascus to try to talk to new Syria president to let Russia  to  move their arm & missiles to later fight against Ukraine. As Russian military convoy was reportedly prevented from entering Tartus naval base in Syria. This is the latest indication of estrangement between the two are once erstwhile allies. Now This move came amid the ongoing withdrawal of Russian forces from Tartus in the wake of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s (HTS) sudden overthrow of dictator Bashar Al Assad late last year 2024.

  1. “The Syrian Defense Ministry has prevented a Russian military convoy from entering Tartus base,” Turkish TRT media outlet reported on Tuesday. “A column of 30 missile-armed vehicles that set out in morning from the Khmeimim airbase in Latakia province, was stopped at a checkpoint in Tartus by Syria troops subordinate to the new Syrian govt. After waiting at the checkpoint for eight hours, the convoy was forced to return to Khmeimim base at around 5 p.m. local time.”

Video emerging on social media showed Syrian forces ordering the convoy to turn around and head back to Khmeimim. The trucks appear to be caring missiles in their launch tubes.

Western allies & Arab countries gather in Paris to discuss Syria’s future.

PARIS (AP) — Western allies and Arab countries are gathering in Paris on Thursday for an international conference on Syria to discuss the country’s future after the fall of former Syrian president Bashar Assad and amid uncertainty over the United States’ commitment to the region.

It’s the third conference on Syria since Assad was ousted in December, and the first since President Donald Trump’s administration took over in the U.S.

Trump’s controversial decision to freeze foreign assistance has raised concerns in Syria, a country that had depended on hundreds of millions of dollars in aid from the U.S. and now left in ruins by a civil war. Trump is pulling almost all USAID workers out of the field worldwide, all but ending a six-decade. .

Kurds in the new Syria hope to preserve cultural rights they gained in years of war. Kurdish leaders are negotiating with the new authorities in Damascus. Kurds in Syria were marginalized during five decades of Assad family rule, with many denied citizenship and wrongly described as Arabs. Now they are seizing the chance during the post-Assad transition to keep the cultural gains they made in the northeast enclave they carved out during the country's civil war.

Mothers can now give children Kurdish names. Kurdish language is taught in schools. The new year, Nowruz, can be celebrated openly. Kurds, one of the world’s largest populations without a state of their own, have been feeling some control over their lives and want to make that permanent with a new govt in power.

The capture of Damascus by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) the collapse of regime of Bashar al-Assad last Dec sent shockwaves through Syria’s political landscape, heralding an unprecedented shift in power. The HTS, formerly the Al-Nusra Front, is a litmus test for assessing Islamist organisations through state-building. Heart of transforming Syria must be development safeguarding of women’s rights. This prove a revealing lens through which to measure sincerity of HTS’s professed reforms.
But so far a stark disparity has emerged between their rhetoric of inclusivity reality. This appears to involve perpetuating entrenched institutional practices of patriarchal conservatism. After seizing Damascus, HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa took pains to project an image of inclusive governance. He claimed: “Syria is a nation of many identities and beliefs, to ensure they coexist peacefully within a just system.” He highlighted 60% of university students in city of Idlib are women,& portrayed HTS as a moderate force that values women’s roles in society.

Yet interviews with senior regime figures as well as policy decisions and governance practices expose these statements as hollow. Instead they suggest a deep-seated commitment to hardline religious conservatism. The new administration’s official spokesperson, Obaida Arnaout, said recently that appointing a woman to a role in the ministry of defence would not “align with her essence, her biological and psychological nature”. This was framed as acknowledging women’s suitability for other roles, but it ultimately reflects a deeply conservative, patriarchal attitude.

DAMASCUS, Syria — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that he was demanding the “complete demilitarization” of southern Syria, a shock announcement that his defense minister described as a “new policy” and that appeared to formalize Israel’s recent expansion into Syrian territory.

In a speech to Israeli military cadets, he said the Israel Defense Forces will remain inside Syria “indefinitely to protect our settlements and neutralize any threat.”“Let it be clear — we will not allow HTS forces or the New Syrian Army to enter the area south of Damascus,” he said, referring to Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham, the militant group presiding over Syria’s transition. “We demand the complete demilitarization of southern Syria in the Quneitra, Daraa and Suwayda provinces from the forces of the new regime.”
