The Sapsan (also known as Grom-2) is a Ukrainian short-range ballistic missile system developed by KB Pivdenne and PA Pivdenmash. That drew in some of Russia's best units, before a second assault was launched eastwards out of the city of Kharkiv. In a little over a month, this lightning offensive reclaimed 5,000 square miles of territory, and rattled Putin so badly that now know he considered dropping a nuclear bomb in order to stop it. Ukrainians dealt yet another enormous blow on enemy war machine. Targeting on a largest Russian arsenals. A massive facility storing hundreds & thousands of munitions of various types was engulfed in flames that continued to burn for days.

One powerful explosion occurred at main Russia’s Missile Artillery Directorate near in Vladimir Oblast, about 70 km northeast of Moscow the local governor & residents published videos of explosion, numerous secondary detonations continue to follow, with large-scale fire. Local were forced to announce evacuation nearby villages & the closure of main road connecting Moscow to Kirzhach.

Depot, spanning an area of approximately 3.5 square km, was Russia's largest most strategically significant munitions storage sites housed up 264,000 tons ordnances or around 6 million artillery shells, enough for more than 1-year of combat op. Arsenal for eg: High-explosive artillery shells, anti-tank guided missiles, ballistic rockets, and solid-fueled surface-to-surface missiles, some potentially designated for Iskander and Smerch systems. Reports of 1st blast was caused by a direct hit during unloading of newly received munitions soon triggered a chain of catastrophic secondary detonations, sending shockwaves across the surrounding region. Massive plumes of dark smoke were seen for hours, while fireballs and repeated bursts were captured in dramatic detail on released footage. The visual evidence strongly suggests the ignition of high-energy solid propellants, further indicating the presence of advanced missile systems. The scale and intensity of the blast rendered much of the arsenal unsalvageable. This was later confirmed by released satellite data from NASA Firms, used for monitoring fires, showing a huge inferno on the site viewable from space.

While, as usual, the Russian government attributed the blast to a fire caused by safety violations in handling explosives, initial data from open-source military observers suggested that the explosion may have been the result of a Ukrainian long-range drone strike. Potentially it involved the domestically produced Palianytsia turbojet drone missile system, capable of striking targets deep inside Russian territory.

Here, the Ukrainian air defense got one of the biggest boosts as reports emerged that a new powerful flying radar from Sweden had probably already arrived in Ukraine. This system will help the Ukrainian air defenses not only in their offensive operations but will also significantly support their ability to defend the Ukrainian rear from constant Russian missile & drone attacks. Sweden has pledged to deliver two ASC 890 airborne warning and control system planes to Ukraine as part of its largest military aid package to date, valued at about 1.16 billion euros. Sweden's decision marks significant enhancement in Ukraine's air defense capabilities. These aircraft, equipped with advanced Erieye radar systems, are designed to provide long-range surveillance and target identification. While official confirmation is pending, there are reports that a calibration aircraft was flying over western Ukraine, which might indicate Ukrainians are making final preparations, recalibrating and fine-tuning ground-based radars for the arrival of the new Swedish planes.

The ASC 890, based on the Saab 340 airframe, is an airborne early warning and control aircraft. It features the Erieye radar, a fixed, active electronically scanned array mounted atop the fuselage. This radar system offers a detection range of up to 450 km and can track multiple targets simultaneously, including aircraft, missiles, and drones. By operating at high altitudes of 6,000 meters, the ASC 890 can monitor vast areas, providing real-time data to command centers and enhancing situational awareness. Essentially, aircraft like the ASC 890 serve as flying radar stations and command centers, coordinating air and ground operations effectively, with its compact size and reliability making it ideal for rapid deployment.

In the context of Ukraine's current defense infrastructure, the ASC 890 represents a substantial upgrade. Ukraine's existing radar systems are primarily ground-based, and even though some of them have a range of around 350 to 400 kilometers, their immobility limits their range and makes them vulnerable to terrain obstructions. The ASC 890's airborne platform overcomes these limitations, offering a broader and more flexible surveillance capability. This enhancement is crucial for the early detection of incoming threats, more accurate tracking of them, and a better response time that would allow Ukrainian air defense to intercept air threats more successfully.

The integration of the ASC 890 is particularly significant in light of Ukraine's acquisition of Western fighter jets, notably the F-Sixteens. After the manufacturer, SAAB, made some updates to improve the interoperability between the two systems, the ASC 890 can now provide these aircraft with comprehensive situational awareness, guiding them to targets and alerting them to potential threats. As a result, these awacs will significantly improve the engagement range of the F-Sixteens, allowing them to use their modern air-to-air missiles at their maximum ranges, as well as providing a significant improvement to the limited radar detection range of the F-Sixteen. This synergy enhances the operational effectiveness of fighter jets, enabling more precise and coordinated missions. Additionally, the ASC 890's data can even support Soviet-era Ukrainian fighter jets, extending their operational capabilities despite technological disparities. Sharing real-time radar data and threat information with ground-based command centers, Ukrainians can then relay targeting and situational awareness updates to the pilots via secure radio or datalink. This allows older aircraft, despite lacking modern onboard radars, to operate more effectively by flying with external guidance and warning support.

Ukraine’s air defenses stunning performance on April 27, intercepting 11 Russian cruise missiles in under two minutes using NASAMS system. A  Lieutenant Colonel confirmed record-breaking feat, adding to Ukraine’s tally of over 150 aerial targets destroyed action highlights Ukraine’s growing strength in aerial defense as Russia’s missile tactics falter. A week leading up to April 28 saw Ukraine shoot down 442 Shahed drones, 31 Kh-101 & Kh-55SM cruise missiles, among other threats, a massive success reflects both European and U.S. military support, signaling Russia’s reliance on aerial assaults may be increasingly ineffective. Khalino Air Base was a key Russian stronghold, packed with advanced defenses and home to devastating glide bomb campaigns. But in a brilliantly executed strike, Ukraine obliterated this "impenetrable fortress."
Using drones and ATACMS missiles, Ukraine outsmarted Russia’s radar and air defenses, taking out critical systems and dealing a major blow to its war effort.
