Russian advance in Donetsk region has halted, but remains threatening. The Ukrainian army managed to deploy reserves to stop Moscow's soldiers north of Pokrovsk, but it has struggled to find a response to Russia's new infiltration tactics.

A Ukrainian soldier in a 2S1 Gvozdika tank front line near city of Pokrovsk.
Russian breakthrough north of Pokrovsk, that took place during first week of August, has halted. The "rabbit ears" – the nickname referring to the shape of the advance on the interactive map Deepstatemap.live – were cut off by a series of Ukrainian counterattacks, just as this "Russian success" could have weighed on the diplomatic process underway in Alaska. Crucial for Ukrainian logistics, the T0514 supply road (which connects Dobropillia to Kramatorsk), is no longer under direct fire from Russian infantry groups who had infiltrated the northern tip of the Russian advance, 10 kilometers north of its starting point in the village of Novotroitske. Yet much of the Ukrainian supply to Kramatorsk has already been rerouted farther north, onto the T0510 road.
Geolocated footage published on August 14 and 18 shows how the Ukrainian Armed Forces stopped Russian soldiers along a wooded strip southwest of the hamlet of Petrivka (one kilometer north of the T0514 road). Other footage, published on August 17 and 18, shows Ukrainian troops raising their flag in the center of the village of Zolotyi Kolodiaz after driving out the Russian occupying army from the "left ear."

Ukrainian forces in the sector have seized the initiative, moving from a defensive posture to a broad counteroffensive that is steadily reshaping the frontline. The momentum shift is allowing Ukrainian units to dictate the pace of battle, breaking down Russian cohesion and allowing elite enemy forces to be encircled. Recently, Ukrainian forces started successfully advancing near Kindrativka, Andriivka, Oleksiivka, Yablunivka, and Yunakivka. They have been supported by a series of air strikes against Russian concentrations of forces and effective disruption of enemy reinforcement attempts, w/Russians trying to cross a local lake being targeted by drones.
Ukrainian commanders are exploiting these issues with precision continuously forcing Russians into a defensive posture they cannot maintain. Geolocated footage shows Ukrainian special forces approach a Russian position in the forest at close range, offering seven enemy soldiers the opportunity to surrender. They refused and were eliminated in the ensuing firefight, and while clearing the area, inaccurate Russian mortar fire only came down after the Russian soldiers were already eliminated, wounding one soldier who was quickly evacuated and survived his wounds. Enemy documents, weapons, and other equipment were seized, further allowing Ukrainians to take advantage of the collapse of Russian military organization.
Nowhere was this more evident than at Sadky, where Ukrainian forces managed to encircle elements of the 51st VDV Brigade, a supposedly elite airborne formation that should not be prone to such breakdowns. Sadky itself remains under Ukrainian control, but reports indicate that Russian soldiers have been trapped and eliminated in the nearby forest spanning 15 square kilometers.
These events are not an isolated failure, but a symptom of a deeper, structural problem within the Russian military in the area. Russia’s operational mindset, long focused on continuous offensives, appears to have eroded its ability to mount an effective defense. In pursuit of gains during the summer offensive, Russian commanders committed vast reserves of armor and manpower, leaving little left to plug gaps when momentum stalled. The fighting in Kursk was particularly costly: armored vehicles were destroyed in huge numbers, forcing Russia to rely on infantry, motorcycles, and small assault teams. Now in Sumy, most Russian soldiers move on foot, taking them days to reach the frontline, and they can’t respond effectively when Ukrainians attack. Additionally, North Korean troops were annihilated by Ukrainian cluster munitions 200 soldiers at a time, and the Russian infantry that remains is exhausted, making the Russian Sumy front thinly manned and dangerously vulnerable.

A Russian military analyst embedded with Russian forces in this sector reported that Russians are suffering from glaring issues with defensive cohesion. Russian forces are unable to effectively coordinate their fire onto Ukrainian assaults, requested reinforcements never arrive, and counterattacks to counter Ukrainian advances often come days too late.

Faced with this unfolding crisis, Russian command has attempted to reinforce the sector w/battalion from 810th Naval Infantry Brigade, tasked w/stabilizing Kindrativka. Yet solution only compound the problem, Russian brigade suffered devastating losses during Kursk battles believed to be operating at only 35 to 45% of its nominal combat strength. Rather deploying intact battalion, the reality is a composite force cobbled together from remnants of different units, a half hearted measure further undermines cohesion interoperability, reinforcements soon slow, as Ukrainian advances temporarily, they lack the depth and organization to mount a meaningful defense. Overall, in the Sumy region, the narrative has shifted entirely, and what began as a Ukrainian defensive effort has evolved into offensive momentum that is dismantling Russian positions piece by piece. For Russia, the situation is a bitter reversal, as it was just weeks ago that President Vladimir Putin himself issued aggressive statements about pushing into Sumy and even threatening the regional capital. Without fresh reserves or a radical change in operational approach, Russia is poised to lose even more ground and with it, any lingering credibility in its ability to threaten the city of Sumy again. Ukrainian defensive plans not only absorbed Russian pressure but now turnedtide, enabling methodical counterattacks pushing Russian forces back across the sector.

President Trump met with Zelensky and European leaders at the White House and nothing was announced and nothing was agreed upon. Trump has no plan and has no clue what he is doing. One of Russia’s leading drone manufacturers is facing serious financial difficulties that have brought it to the brink of bankruptcy, the CNews news website has reported. Kronstadt, known for its Orion and Inokhodets drones used for both military and civilian purposes, has been hit with 40 lawsuits totaling 626.3 million rubles ($7.8 million, according to spot foreign exchange market data published by Reuters) over the past three months. The largest claims came from Innovative Technologies and Materials (151.1 million rubles) and the Research Institute of Modern Telecommunications Technologies (220.6 million rubles). Kronstadt itself faced an attempted bankruptcy filing by Turbodjet Micro in August 2023. The company’s most recent publicly available financial figures, from 2020, showed a revenue of 2 billion rubles ($24.9 million) and a net loss of 3.6 billion rubles ($44.8 million). “The situation could lead to bankruptcy,” Nikolai Ryashin, CEO of drone service company RusDronPort, told CNews. “Subcontractors who provided services or delivered products without receiving payment are now filing lawsuits en masse to enter the creditors’ registry.”
Sources in the Russian drone market told CNews that Kronstadt has struggled financially for the past two years. A key factor was the 2022 exit of AFK Sistema, the company’s former strategic investor and primary source of funding. “Losing that financial backing sharply reduced access to capital and increased debt pressure,” one source told CNews. “Without that ‘wallet,’ the company was left to handle cash shortfalls on its own.”

During a Kyiv visit marked by an air raid alert, NATO chief Mark Rutte emphasized the need for strong security guarantees to prevent future Russian aggression and vowed the alliance will never again let Moscow take even "one square kilometre" of Ukraine. President Zelensky added that guarantees include both partner support and the strength of Ukraine’s army after the war.

19 Aug 2025 – Tokmak–Urozhayne rail link.
Ukraine used Malyuk‑V2 loitering munitions to hit a fuel train: 7 drones, 6:48 minutes, ~150 tons of fuel. Post‑blast, ~312 m of track was deformed; the line shut for ~6 days. We explain how one precision strike disrupted Crimea & southern front logistics, what “self‑igniting target” doctrine means, and why rail outages stall artillery ammo, JP‑8 air fuel, and armor moves.

On July 25, 2025, at exactly 9:50 a.m., a massive 71-vehicle Russian armored convoy attempted a bold two-pronged raid across the Luhansk–Donetsk axis—only to be ambushed in one of the most devastating Ukrainian counterstrikes of the war. Ukrainian drones tracked every movement. Leopard 2A6 tanks, Marder IFVs, Paladin howitzers, Switchblade kamikaze drones, and FPV swarms were perfectly positioned. Within 40 minutes, 64 vehicles were destroyed, including T-72s, BTR-82s, MT-LBs, and pickups loaded with MANPADS and mortars.
Russian forces suffered catastrophic losses. Meanwhile, Ukraine used fewer than half its fire plans. The outcome changed the pace of the front—completely freezing the Russian advance for days.
➤ Watch as we break down how Ukraine’s coordinated tank-killer ambush annihilated Russia’s largest convoy attempt since 2022.

July 20, 2025. In the rural outskirts of Guyevo, Kursk Oblast, an extraordinary 8-vs-25 encounter took place that rewrote the rules of modern commando warfare. Ukrainian special forces, riding in two Humvees, found themselves face-to-face with 25 North Korean artillery and infantry troops operating on Russian soil under Kremlin command.
Here!. What unfolded next on North Koean was a meticulously executed ambush powered by silent infiltration, thermal-guided turret systems, remote-controlled ground robots, ECM jamming, and real-time HIMARS support. With just 8 commandos, Ukraine neutralized an entire North Korean detachment, destroyed a Koksan 170mm artillery gun, blew up an ammunition truck, & silenced a DJI-style recon drone mid-flight. This is detailed frontline report of how intelligence, surprise, & technology triumphed over numbers— & how Russia’s reliance on foreign manpower backfired spectacularly.
🔍What You’ll See in This Video:
🛡️ Tactical Setup: Two Ukrainian Humvees enter Kursk’s Guyevo village via a mine-laced route &
V-shaped armor deflects blasts, while run-flat tires absorb a PFM-1S mine
Each Humvee carries RS4 remote turrets, bomb robots, and Cisco-Kiver network links...

Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) has released a video showing an ops foiled a Russian attempt break through Donetsk Oblast & advance towards borders of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. DIU’s Russian Volunteer Corps – Russian volunteers fighting for Ukraine – also involved in ops. conducted by Russian Volunteer Corps, Bratstvo unit from DIU’s Tymur Special Detachment, & soldiers from 5th Separate Heavy Mechanised Brigade of Armed Forces of Ukraine. Russian Volunteer Corps captured 16 service personnel during assault & mop-up ops.
