I hope I do not hurt anybody religious feelings. But to think that burning something made of paper will appear in the here after as the real thing is not very scientific. I tried to explain to my mom many times it is not necessary. Her reply is if not necessary why people do it for last 1000yrs.

The shops that sell these paper offerings need to make a living. If you ask them, they will say that the paper offerings will appear as real in the underworld. So have to burn, if not the ghost will suffer in hell.

Retold many time by my relatives- cousin who died of liver cancer came out in the middle of the night, gave a tap on brother's shoulder (he woke up in the middle of the night to pee).Next morning told mother who consulted a taoist medium who explained that dead son could not received all those paper gold, food, etc. Of course aunt quickly prayed and burned in a separate urn. seriously think this practice need more control. during cheng meng at guangmingshan, u see mountains of boxes/clothes/aeroplane/houses waiting to burn.. pple shd adopt other more environmental friendly means to pray. at least if u pray with food, u still get to eat it.

Only gold and silver paper accepted in Hell.
Not paper bitcoin or paper currency.
This is why they are folded into 元宝。
The rest of the $$$, are not legal tendered in Hell.
You will waste your money buying all these stuffs.

It is a custom or tradition.
You can dont believe, but you cant force ppl to follow your way.

One very good teaching about buddhism is that human beings are actually God but they are blinded by cravings and desires. Once all these cravings and desires eradicate, they will attain Nirvana in Buddhist concept. Meaning become God in layman term.

They are total 10 superpowers you may attain during your enlightenment cycle if I did not remember wrongly.

Those notes the Chinese burnt are for the ghost realm but for communication purposes, hell note is used for convenience. 

The hell realm is just a torture pit with 18 chambers of different torture.methods.

I think these burning of money and other offerings to the dead are for relieving the conscience and guilts of those livings doing the offerings. They feel more at peace and have better dreams instead of nightmares. 
For example my grandma wud dreamt often of my grandpa appearing in her dreams without shirt and living in a tent. After deciphering her dreams she would burn some paper shirts, shoes, hats and a bungalow for my grandpa. After that she feel peaceful and had good dreams. This is just one example of how burning offerings help the livings........
