Reason being when the first batch of losing Chinese land on Taiwan they chase the existing aborigines into the mountains. So likewise if China troops land, Taiwanese can head and hide in the mountains. Remember US marines have a hard time taking those Pacific Islands from Jap troops in WWII? Jap hide in mountains and wage a long protracted war against US marines. Mountains are natural defenses and with some caves dig in can hide unless China invent weapons that can level flat a mountain?!?! Atomic bomb?

China can bomb anywhere they like. But, the mountainous and terrain areas serves a good defence for Taiwan military. Chinese soldiers might hv a hard battle when they moved-in land forces. Just like what happened during Vietnam war when American land forces cannot fight the Vietnamese in the mountains nous and terrain regions. Vietnamese are good fighters in land forces.

No food and water soldiers and civilian soon will surrender. But if they invent growing crops inside caves than cham. Next will be classic strategy poison their fresh water like streams and rivers but then got rain water. So it is not that easy to take Taiwan if they go into defensive mode IMHO.
