Slovakia likely to hand over MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine

What Biden quitting means for Harris, the Democrats and Trump?. Joe Biden has turned the US election on its head. After fiercely insisting for weeks that he would remain the Democratic nominee for president, he has bowed to pressure and dropped out of the race.e Here's what it means for Vice-President Kamala Harris, for the Democrats more broadly and for Donald Trump. A prospects for Kamala Harris being the Democratic nominee have received a big boost with Joe Biden’s endorsement. He gave her his full backing, calling his decision to make her vice-president four years ago the best he ever made.

She responded by saying she was honoured to have his endorsement and would do everything possible to win the nomination. It is possible that most Democrats will follow the president’s lead and fall in line behind the vice-president to avoid ongoing uncertainty less than a month from the Democratic convention. There are practical and political reasons for doing so.

She is next in the constitutional line of succession. The optics of passing over the first black woman on a presidential ticket would be terrible for the party.

She would also immediately have access to the roughly $100 million in funds the campaign has raised so far.

Ukraine will soon receive F-16s, combat-proven Western fighter jets able to augment the war-torn country's depleted force of aging Soviet-era aircraft. A key question is how Ukraine should "optimize use of relatively small number of F-16s" it is set to receive the limited availability of trained pilots, airpower experts say. Ukraine, they could leverage its new fighter jets as part of integrated air-ground campaign to secure brief, localized air superiority as part of a larger operation to secure breakthroughs in specific areas.

Ret. US Air Force Lt. Gen. David Deptula, now the dean of Mitchell Institute, & Christopher Bowie, non resident fellow for Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, wrote in new Mitchell Institute report "by conducting an integrated air-ground campaign to secure air superiority in the times & places of its choosing, Ukraine can further its military's momentum on the battlefield & begin reversing territorial gains, Russian army has achieved up to this point."

Air superiority refers to the condition in which one side can conduct operations in pursuit of its objective without prohibitive interference from the enemy. Neither Ukraine nor Russia have gained widespread or significant air superiority thus far in the war, though Russia appeared to establish temporary, localized control of the skies around Avdiivka in February. That limited support helped the Russian troops overwhelm Ukrainian defenses and capture the war-torn area.

Ukraine confirms Russian ferry 'seriously damaged' on Crimea. Ukrainian attack on occupied Crimea overnight resulted in a ferry used by Russian forces to transport military equipment being "seriously damaged," The drones attacked the ship at the Port of Kavkaz, lies in the Kerch Strait separating peninsula from Russia's Krasnodar Krai, the region's governor claimed.
According to him, one person was killed and "there were injured" in the attack.

Traffic was reportedly halted on the Kerch Bridge connecting mainland Russia with occupied Crimea. "The occupiers used this ferry to transport railway wagons, motor vehicles and containers for military purposes," it said. "Slavyanin is the third and last railway ferry that the Russian Federation had in the specified region."

The ferry crossing, representing a key logistical connection between the occupied peninsula and mainland Russia, was hit several times in late May with Ukrainian drones and missiles.

RAF Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft and its twin Typhoon EuroFighter escort over international waters of the Black Sea. A U.S. Boeing RC-135W aircraft operating over Black Sea play mouse with Russian forces for almost 4-hours as it probed Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula air defenses. At one point it switched off its transponders, effectively disappearing from civilian radars for more than an hour offshore from the major Russian base of Sevastopol.

The mission only ended after a Russian Sukhoi-27 (NATO: Flanker) fighter caught up with the British four-engine aircraft, based on Boeing’s C-135 Stratolifter airframe, along with its two fighter escorts in international air space.

A Cold War-era spy plane continually updated by Boeing, the RC-135 is crammed with electronics designed to detect and fix the location of radars and transmitters. Its main use is to gather data on the location of enemy air defense systems. NATO routinely operates RC-135s over southeastern Romania, but only rarely deploys the unarmed planes over the Black Sea, according to open-source flight tracking data.

Air traffic data reviewed by Kyiv, the RC-135W with call sign RRR7224 took off from England Waddington base, and flew across Europe b4 reaching Black Sea at about 11:00 Universal Metric Time (UMT). Launched from Mihail Kogălniceanu airport, a NATO air base near the Romanian port city of Constanta, tailed the flying escort patterns ranging close-in, at 50 kilometers (31 miles) distance, flight data showed.

Ukraine's hopes and challenges after long wait for F-16s. The first F-16 fighter jets are set to arrive in Ukraine from Nato member states, after many months of preparation and pilot training.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said they are essential to help Ukrainians push back against Russia's aerial dominance and “unblock the skies”. Russian forces have been preparing for the Ukrainian F-16s too. They have targeted a number of Ukrainian military airfields and there are growing concerns these long-awaited jets will be attacked & destroyed soon after they arrive.

In July alone, at least three airfields have come under attack: Myrhorod and Kryvyi Rih in central Ukraine and one in southern Odesa region.

Moscow claims it has destroyed  5-Ukrainian Su-27 fighter jets & one MiG-29, along with a radar & valuable Patriot air defence launchers. Kyiv authorities are keeping mostly silent & air force has refused a BBC request for comment, claiming on social media the destroyed jets & air defence system were in reality decoys and had cost Russia several expensive Iskander missiles.

Russian Reports of F-16s Spotted Over Odesa Dismissed as Disinformation. Russian media cited unnamed social media reports of the sighting of at least four F-16 fighters, having taken off from Romania, making test flights over the western Black Sea.

Some of those sources insisted the aircraft had taken off from airfields in Romania. Romania’s National Defense of Romania was quick to deny the allegations, issuing a statement on Tuesday, July 16 that said: “So-called unidentified ‘sources’ on the Russian Telegram platform, have claimed that F-16 aircraft took off from Romanian airfields to carry out missions in Ukrainian airspace, over the Odesa region.”

Ukraine developed new shields for its US-made Bradleys, are excelling against Russia. Company making the shields said testing was successful, they were starting mass production. Ukraine has also created shields for tanks as both sides try to protect their gear from drones. The chief op officer of Ukraine's Metinvest Group, told Newsweek that shields, cost about $2 mil each, were "successful in testing" and that company was "moving into mass production." The shield is a sliding screen on top of the M2 Bradleys.

Myronenko said it was more complicated than earlier designs as it needed to "slide back and forth from top to the side of the vehicle depending on the combat situation."

Lithuania condemns Hungary's decision to ease entry conditions for Russians and Belarusians: it threatens EU security. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that Lithuania was "unpleasantly surprised" by reports of simplified entry to Belarus for Russian and Belarusian citizens. This will allow them to enter and move freely within the Schengen area.

"Lithuania believes this step by Hungary poses very serious threats to the security of the Schengen area and many European countries, which is why it is necessary to respond to it at the EU level," the Lithuanian Foreign Minister stressed.
Landsbergis announced that Lithuania had asked the European Commission to analyse Hungary's decision in terms of the integrity of the Schengen area and the elimination of threats to it.

In July, Hungary published details a new fast-track visa system for citizens eight countries, including Russia & Belarus, who will be able to enter Hungary without security checks or other restrictions. Budapest said many will be building a nuclear power plant using Russian technology.

Ukraine has received its first delivery of F-16 fighter jets from NATO allies. Sources familiar with the matter confirmed that the number of jets delivered is small but marks an important step for Ukraine’s military strategy.

Transfer was scheduled for end of July and was completed as planned. Delivery follows formation of “fighter jet coalition” at Vilnius NATO summit a year ago, led by Denmark & the Netherlands. Over the coming years, Ukraine is expected to receive at least 79 F-16s from the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, and Norway. Additionally, the coalition has pledged to assist in training Ukrainian pilots & technical staff to operate the jets effectively.

Ukraine's military says it sunk Russian Black Sea Fleet submarine, damaged S-400 missile system in 'successful hit'. Ukraine's military said on Aug. 3 that a Ukrainian missile strike the day before sunk a Russian Black Sea Fleet submarine and damaged a S-400 air defense system in Russian-occupied Crimea.

In a statement on Telegram, the military said that the Ukrainian strike had "significantly damaged" four launchers of Russia's modern S-400 Triumph air defense system.

The military named the Kilo-class submarine Rostov-on-Don as the submarine that it says sunk in the port of Sevastopol.

The Russia submarine, capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles, had sustained "significant damage" in an earlier September Ukrainian missile attack but it had been repaired. The estimated value of the submarine is $300 million, according to the military. "As a result of the hit, the boat sank on the spot," the General Staff said in the statement.

The deployment of the powerful F-16s have prompted a Russian war channel to say the “hunt” for them begins now. The Kremlin has reportedly put up a pricey bounty for destroying each individual jet and eliminating a Ukrainian pilot.

Ukraine say they now have 10 of the NATO-supplied planes in their war arsenal. President Volodymyr Zelensky is said to be hoping for almost eight times as many jets in the coming months as they look to continue to stall Putin’s invasion.

In 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will only be able to use no more than 10 of the F-16 fighters provided Western at any one time, according to a New York Times (NYT) assessment. The NYT said Ukrainian pilots were currently “getting used to conducting operations on a small scale,”have not yet engaged in combat with Russian forces.

It added “Ukrainian officials have warned delays in deliveries of F-16s could diminish the jets’ effect on battlefield, giving Russia time to adapt its tactics.” added. It is estimated that only about 20 Ukrainian pilots are currently able to fly aircraft, which will allow Ukraine to deploy only about 10 F-16s in combat, given that two pilots are needed for each plane to maintain operations.

To Outmaneuver Russians, Ukrainian 3rd Assault Brigade Captured A Radio—N Posed as a Russian Unit, a battle of deception north of Kharkiv, on day Russia celebrates Soviet victory on Nazi Germany—quickly ran into a wall of Ukrainian mechanized brigades. Commanders HQ, all very modern. But sometimes out come hinges on most ancient tenet of warfare: deception. Ukrainian army’s 3rd Assault Brigade, fighting north of Kharkiv this summer, showed how—early morning attack turn into elaborate daytime ruse. Cameras in brigade’s HQ with tanks infantry captured drama.

Working very carefully, very carefully,” tanks attacked, “I’ll never forget, forgive bastards!” bellowed at unseen Russians tanks fired a few rounds pumped out smoke screen. “Let’s get moving,” an infantry leader said. Ukrainian infantry reached outermost Russian trenches can hear Russian machine gunner just 100 yards away. “Little by little, yes, we moving,” infantry leader urging his soldiers forward & advanced along trench toward the gully—a Russian strongpoint. “We need to shoot tank or mortar there,” a commander said back at to HQ..

One T-72s fired 3 shots. “All shots hit perfectly,” commander observed. Back in trench, a Ukrainian soldier sat bleeding wounded to his hand, another had suffered injury on buttocks. “ass bleeding?". Scrutinizing drone feeds, officers analyzed battle field. As Russian machine gunner “controls two sectors,” officer concluded. Luckily is Ukrainians, a stroke of luck. Ukrainian soldiers found an intact Russian radio, left behind by retreating infantry. “They’re assaulting us,” a Russian soldier complained on his channel.
That radio was an opportunity. “Get frequencies of the radio,” a 3rd Assault Brigade commander barked. “Try to organize it.”

With Russian-speaker!” The Ukrainian’s chatter indicated reinforcements. It's speaking to soldier hopped on captured radio. “We’re 1st Company,” transmitted—part same battalion as Russians in the gully. The Russian machine gun shifted fire to avoid hitting its “allies.”“Let’s go,” the 3rd Assault Brigade infantry leader ordered. “Yell in Russian!”
By then Russians realized soldiers approaching them weren’t fellows Russians, it was too late. They were all but surrounded.
