Thats what they told you in secondary school. That it was a surprise attack. These days, not everyone agree with the official narrative. The US goaded Japan to attack it as a pretext to enter the war. Before that, America was somewhat neutral because Americans did not want to go to war far away offshore. They were protected by the Pacific & Atlantic oceans. The war hadn't affected them. Pear Harbour was what it needed to kickstart the homegrown war effort. After Pearl Harbour, every American became pro war. Factories were converted into war machines. America dropped 2 atomic bombs not "to exact revenge" as you like to believe. It was meant to scare off the Russians who were eyeing Japan that was already weakened thru years of high intensity war. The Russians do have territorial claims on Japan even till today.
