Humans have evolved but not fast enough to overcome the programming that become serious flaws that cause problems in the context of our present society. Most men and some women fall into one of these traps 1. Uncontrolled lust 2. Gambling addiction 3. Substance abuse.

A simple thing like cigarettes which is known to harm body and waste money, some people also cannot stop once addiction takes hold. Why?

Why does simple act of sexual pleasure which can have devastating consequences become so compulsive that men cannot stop themselves from acts that destroy their lives.

Many years ago I attended a Buddhist lecture and after that became friends with a monk who was a westerner who took up the religion. A lot of Buddhist literature is in Chinese at that time but I wanted to know how people can overcome their "worldly desires" greed, lust, jealousy,etc. It had become blatantly clear to me that the materialism and greed we breed in our society can only lead to dismal outcomes not real happiness.

You can observe what is outside of you. Do you observe your own mind? The mind is full of primal evolutionary programming that control your behavior. From the automatic emotional  triggers that cause anger, arrogance,  greed
, jealousy...it is also rife with flaws that will trap you in bad behavior.

To be aware of your mind, one has to observe one's own thought process to prevent the path to flawed behavior.
