China is just wayanging in front to be indignant, I suspect they will probably celebrate behind closed doors if Japan and Korea really join NATO.
From a military perspective, Japan and Korea are already under the umbrella protection of US through TMCS (Jp) and MDT (Kr). All NATO does is add in a bunch of Europeans with no power projection capabilities, so in terms of military implications Japan and Korea's joining NATO is minimal.
The only real tangible benefit is more opportunities for news headlines on forums, meetings, photo-ops, interviews, joint exercises etc. These are mostly PR gains which are ultimately peripheral in the grand scheme of geopolitics.
However, the cost of these two joining NATO is extremely high for US, Japan and Korea. It will severely tilt the contest for Asian pre-eminence in favor of China. All the Southeast and South Asian countries are very allergic to a formal alliance like NATO in their region because of historical colonial subjugation, anti-Islamic actions and the mess that Europe has endured due to NATO.
We can see even an all form no substance deal like AUKUS has already triggered the nerves of Malaysia and Indonesia, NATO coming to Asia might as well be a recruitment ad for the Chinese camp. The moment these two vassals join NATO, it's bye bye for US in terms of Southeast, South and Central Asia future influence.
Most Asian countries are trying their best to maintain neutrality without choosing between G2 and have expressed their views explicitly on multiple occasions by multiple leaders, but if the US brings a Caucasian military shop into their neighborhood, they will be left with no choice but to slowly move towards red big brother.
Such major strategic losses in return for two vassals that are already in your camp and some opportunities to generate headlines? I would like to believe that US is just creating commotion for PR purpose and has no real intention of doing something that dumb.
