I never believe any of such polls. Of course the anti-China people interpret this as brave Taiwanese resisting against bad China while the pro-China people rant over how badly brainwashed and out of touch the Taiwanese have become.

My personal observation (I admit I don't have solid empirical data evidence) is that neither of these narratives are correct. Taiwanese are neither brave freedom loving people nor brainwashed idiots who really believe nonsense like Japan will save them or PLA will fail in any invasion as they are too backward.

Mainstream Taiwanese attitude can be summed up as:

Q: Do you believe Taiwan is a free and democratic independent country?
A: YES!

Q: Are you willing to fight to protect Taiwan?
A: YES!

Q: Will US and Japan come and rescue Taiwan?
A: Of course!

Q: Seriously, what if the CCP really attacks?
A: (Shrugs) Then we surrender loh!
