Rostec-developed jet has reported capability of striking six targets simultaneously
Russia recently pulled the covers off its new Sukhoi stealth fighter jet, which has been designed as a direct competitor to the US-made F-35.
Dubbed "The Checkmate," the plane was first shown to a reportedly "pleased" President Vladimir Putin before the launch at the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon in Zhukovsky.
"Russian aviation has great potential for development, and our aircraft industry continues to create new competitive aircraft," the Russian president said.
The head of Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, and the general director of United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Yury Slyusar, presented the warplane to Putin at the exhibition pavilion of the Sukhoi company, reported CNN.
"Our task is for this plane to be offered en masse to customers starting from 2026," general director of the Untied Aircraft Corporation, Syusar said, according to AFP.
The jet can reportedly attack up to six targets simultaneously on land, air or sea, and is thought to be able to overcome strong electronic interference.
Slyusar maintained that up to 300 orders were expected in the next 15 years, mainly from the Middle East, Asia and Latin America. He further claimed it would be at least "seven times cheaper" than the F-35, which costs between $80-100 million - and is apparently also very costly to run.
