Even in sg, rare to see driver give ride to stranger.

Quite normal overseas especially in not so urban areas. I was trying to get a cab in Suzhou (called for one earlier but could not get any) on the main road (walked about 1-2 km out). One guy on a scooter with sidecar stopped for me and let me ride into the Suzhou town area where my hotel is. I did not expect that. 

I guess it is because in larger countries, lots of people have difficulty getting transport in the not so urbanised areas, so drivers tend to stop and check if you need a lift.
