PM Lee visited Taiwan when he was DPM and this caused a ruckus in China that shows the anger and hatred in China of Taiwan to the point of wanting to cut Taiwan ties to rest of the world and isolate Taiwan.

The constant ill will, hatred and threats China makes towards Taiwan with frequent breach of air space and military threat ....how can that lead to a "common wealth" .

The natural course for Taiwan to take is to build up it's defense to create a deterrence for attackers. This is what Singapore does and George Yeo as a former SAF officer should know.

Without a strong defense deterrence, Taiwan faces a fate like Ukraine where an aggressive neighbor just come in to take everything that Ukraine has build thinking it's an easy target
