Even if she did not continue her studies at a university, her having attended a JC already placed her above the men who only had a Sec 4 or lower education. She didn't have a lot of men to be picky over, considering that if she is in her 50s now, then she belongs to a time when if she threw a brick at a crowd, she was not so likely to hit a graduate unlike today.
This former classmate graduated from NUS, had a wonderful career and has enough to retire in her 50s. I guess hindsight is 20/20. She thought that having a successful career, wealth and power would satisfy her, so she didn't need a man if he didn't tick all the right boxes. Now she feels the loneliness without a family as she contemplates retirement looming in about a decade.
