Being thrifty is good. Like they say, waste not, want not.

But we should still have occasions of extravagance and enjoy a bit. What's the point of subjecting himself to the stresses of gambling on stocks and the uncertainties of running an online business (before covid) and saying he's his own employer if he doesn't even give this employee that's himself a bit of staff welfare and medical and H&S benefits?
