YANGON (dpa): Family of Myanmar's ousted former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has had no contact with Nobel Peace Prize winner since her imprisonment around 3 years ago, according to a press report on Monday. "In 3 & a half years, we have only received 1 letter from her, last January," her son Kim Aris told Italian newspaper La Repubblica in interview published on Sunday.
After that, neither he nor his brother ever heard from her again, Aris added, not even after Suu Kyi's transfer from prison in April. Junta ousted het & arrested Suu Kyi, she is democratically elected de facto head of govt, following a coup in February 2021. Junta controlled court later sentenced her to a total of 33 years in prison for numerous alleged crimes.
In 2023, the military junta reduced Suu Kyi's sentence by six years. In April, she was transferred from prison in the capital Naypyidaw to another location. According to her son, the family has not been informed of her whereabouts.
Her two sons had heard that 78-year-old Suu Kyi was ill and suffering from severe toothache that prevented her from eating. They then sent her a parcel with medication.
"And in January, unbelievably, we received a letter signed by her," said Aris. Myanmar authorities arrest 22 for marking Suu Kyi’s birthday: Media reported. Junta has rebuffed numerous requests by foreign leaders & diplomats to meet Ms Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate, who has reportedly suffered health problems during more than three years in detention.
A prominent pro-junta Telegram account posted several photos claiming to show those arrested, including one showing five people with their legs placed in the stocks.
Ms Suu Kyi, who turned 79 on June 19, has been detained by military since it toppled her govt and seized power in 2021. Junta coup and subsequent crackdown on dissent have sparked a widespread armed uprising that the military is struggling to crush. As Myanmar plunged more into chaos as violence following the army's takeover. The junta is coming under increasing pressure politically & also militarily, as rebel groups involved in violent resistance against Junta rule.
