Myanmar junta official ‘hopeful’ for Myanmar to regain normal status in Asean

Asean foreign ministers stand by Myanmar peace plan.
VIENTIANE, Laos - Asean foreign ministers on July 25 stuck by the bloc’s peace plan for Myanmar, even as a civil war sparked by the country’s 2021 military coup widens. During the Asean Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Vientiane, Singapore’s Foreign Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, wrote he & his counterparts “discussed regional & geopolitical developments, including deteriorating situation in Myanmar and the importance of upholding the implementation of the 5-Point Consensus”.

Among other things, the plan calls for the cessation of violence and facilitation of dialogue among all parties concerned, but has been criticised as being dead in the water, given the scale of the conflict sparked by the coup.
