Ban mian boss closes stall and broke off engagement

Feel that he's a good chap, just too bad that the pandemic hit. His stall's last day of operation is on 27 Nov.

There are many reasons why businesses failed, and it may not be that their products are worse. It's a combination of reasons. So don't just assume that their food is bad.

You are right, it  is  a combination of factors that made the business fail...this pandemic is the main cause of the failure........ crying

I think more of they broke up so just wanna close it but he spin a story so he can continue to sell his online chili etc and when time is right he joins his next beau in another noodle shop. Maybe can fix up with the Myanmar gal. Smile

To be a business owner you need to get a lot of support from family members. Maybe the girl thought they can make it big that's why don't mind striking out with him but when the going gets tough, even if she doesn't mind, her family members will nag her to death.

In Singapore, not many people are entrepreneurial anymore because girls will not want to slog with you. In the end, bread triumphs over love. So why not take the easy way out and be an employee? Every month take salary, holidays go overseas and live a more carefree life.

It is never easy to be a hawker... crying

You must have great passion in cooking.
Otherwise, difficult to success.
Rental alone will kill you especially on places with good location. Only those old hawker licence can survive. Much more difficult for young hawker.

Got money to lose then can continue. If not how to endure the rental? Were they in the limelight not long ago?

Mr Chng's reasons for shuttering his ban mian stall seem credible to me. He and his fiancee started the business at the most inopportune time - barely a month before the pandemic struck. There were sightings of tourists during that profitable month as their stall is situated in Hong Lim Food Centre, nestled in the tourist hot spot of Chinatown. With the onset of the coronavirus, there was nary a tourist in sight. To make matters worse, office crowds thinned as white-collar workers began to work from home.

Sales took a battering - from selling 200 bowls a day to less than 10, nowhere near enough to pay for the rising cost of ingredients, rent and themselves. The erstwhile professionals who are both in their twenties have already lost 80 K in the venture, and they do not have a bottomless pit of money to continue operating at a loss. Most people, I'm sure, don't want to spend gruelling hours slaving over a hot stove for nothing, the way they did.

Seeing no light at the end of the tunnel, they decided to end their partnership in the business as well as break off their engagement. Jonathan intends to return to the financial sector and try to earn money to recoup some of the losses, and he may make a comeback to the hawker trade later on.

As for his broken engagement, it's nothing unusual. Even couples making the wedding vow "till death do us part" split up over a host of reasons, such as financial woes, personality clashes, irreconcilable  differences. Around 50% of marriages end in divorce and many serious relationships stop short of becoming long-term. Jonathan and Vanessa were only engaged and not yet married. So are we going to label those quitters "fair-weather companions?" Once we give people labels, it's difficult to see them as individuals.

Actually it is better now to find out they are not compatible for each other rather than later when married.
