For Filipinos like me who grew up under the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos Sr., the news that the U.S. military would expand its presence in the Philippines has been dizzying and wounding. The image of Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin shaking hands in Manila last week with the country’s fatuously smiling president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of the former despot, was like some tragic Groundhog Day.

Wow! This is fun - your "American" never force" story is like telling us the Earth is flat.
Perhaps you need some reality check - Did u missed this part from the article ?
Filipino revolutionaries fighting for the nation’s freedom from 1899 to 1902 had no chance against U.S. forces. During the Philippine-American war more than 200,000 Filipinos were killed or died from famine or disease in a conflict that has been likened to genocide and the U.S. wars against Native Americans.

Philippines independence 1946
that why Philippines know USA can forever good friends
even the vietnam also think that way since vietnam know USA withdrew and do not want to fight any more back in 1972 https://www.officialgazette.gov.ph/featu...20Republic.
Oh my grotesqueness got even more pissed that he forget to even read the details.
According to his source, Pinoy independence came in 1946 - only after WW2 then Americans, like the Brit did with SG, after over 100 years of colonisation.
What's more the Pinoy decided to change their indepdendece day from July 4 (Does that date sound familiar ?) to June 12.
Why the HELL do the Pinoy do that since Americans are "friends" ? >> Because the US Gov refused to pay Pinoy $ that they promised after WW2.
FACT CHECK from same link: Macapagal adopted the view of historians and many political leaders, that the foundation date of the nation should be June 12, since July 4 was the restoration of that independence. Moreover, the move was made in the context of the rejection of the U.S. House of Representatives on the proposed $73 million additional war reparation bill for the Philippines on May 28, 1962. The rejection, according to President Macapagal, caused “indignation among the Filipinos” and a “loss of American good will in the Philippines.”

President Marcos visited US in September 2022 and then he visited Beijing in January 2023. He made this decision after the 2 visits. Is this guy better than President Marcos?

He saw the CCP for what they are and made that decision.
For all of the troubled history, President Biden has a chance to redeem the United States. Representative Susan Wild of Pennsylvania has urged her colleagues to sign the Philippine Human Rights Act, which would suspend security assistance to the Philippines “until violence against dissidents ceases and accountability against the perpetrators commences”. Ms. Wild and a bipartisan group of legislators also are calling for sanctions against Philippine human rights violators.
Until then, the long dance between Washington and Manila continues, to the recurring horror of the Filipino people.
Gina Apostol is a Philippine novelist. Her works include Bibliolepsy and The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata, both of which won the Philippine National Book Award.
Opinion pieces written by arty farty people like this novelist Gina Apostol are usually very emotionally immersive as such folks are very apt at framing their analysis and findings in a heart bleeding and emotional manner. This is a good thing as far as communication goes.
However the fatal shortfall of such people is usually the inability to formulate a practical and feasible solution to the problem. Gina says ordinary Pinoys are being predated by vultures like US and China which I suppose is somewhat true from a Philippines point of view. So what exactly is she suggesting President Marcos do?
Broadly speaking the options can be #1 side with US, #2 side with China, #3 play both sides but also run the risk of offending both parties. Naturally each option comes with its own trade offs and it is up to her to argue why her particular solution provides the best benefit for cost.
Instead of doing that, she ends her piece with a totally childish beyond measure proposal - the solution, according to her, is for Biden to sign some "Philippine Human Rights Act". Is this some sort of a joke? How will Biden signing some stupid US domestic bill help solve the major geopolitical and historical / colonial problems she laboriously elaborated to us earlier above?

There is an International Law called Laws of the Seas or UNCLOS. If there is a dispute over the ocean territory, the laws stipulate a limit of 200 nautical miles as EEZ. How far is this island from China?
