In S'pore, the middle classes are no longer able to buy private housing and cars. Now, many of them can't even afford to eat out unless they head to hawker centres or crossover to JB.

keep voting pap is the only result we keep getting. No growth, only artificial growth inflated by pap. LKY built up bit by bit , LHL slowly deteriorate sg to this state. The old generation people see also shake head.

"According to data from Dollars and Sense, food prices have increased by 58.9% since 2022."

Is it any wonder that Sinkies head for JB every weekend to get more bang for their buck?  The Sing dollar is only strong overseas, but has extremely low purchasing power within our island.  Sinkies better continue up north before our Govt introduces the "3/4 tank and full stomach rule" preventing us from feasting in Johor on top of filling our cars up.

Which begs the question why Caucasians are generally so unhealthy and obese.  Cancer and heart deaths have soared in the Western World.

This is a very poorly written article. It does not provide any sort of evidence to support its main point that middle-class people can no longer afford to dine out and simply regurgitates 101 knowledge explaining why prices are much higher than before.

In fact based on what is published by the government on retail sales at the national level as well as shop GTO, footfall and spending categories disclosed publicly by major retail REITS, there is no indication that the middle class is no longer dinning out since they can no longer afford.

Complaints sure there are a lot now, but significant spending cuts, nothing in the numbers so far.

Also this particular line made me laugh:
Quote:With food prices on the rise, the pressing question in Singapore is – can people still afford to dine out? Will delivery services like Grab and Deliveroo become the new norm?

It is usually more expensive to order takeout of the same food via delivery apps compared to actually eating at the restaurant. For food court and kopitiam stalls that do not charge the ++, it definitely makes more sense to dine out then order food delivery. For restaurants that charge ++, it depends because the mark up and delivery fee usually exceeds that of the surcharges anyway. Only occasionally would there be platform discounts wide enough to make it cheaper to order out.

The writer has obviously little experience ordering take out through platforms and is simply shooting through the hip.

Let us be more precise. Middle - age Middle Class is worst off. Either holding pathetic jobs left over by FTs or no salary increase in the last 8 years with lower pay.
