According to Grace Foo, the interim solution to the current shortage of chickens is relatively simple: eat eggs in the meantime while waiting out the chicken crunch. When fresh chickens aren’t available, the next best thing are the humble eggs, which are in plentiful supply and are a highly nutritious, protein-rich food that can be boiled, scrambled or fried.

It’s as simple as that, nothing like the chicken-and-egg dilemma her many detractors had posed. Foo’s very simplistic approach to the chicken problem, however, left her with egg on her face. Some took issue with her suggestion of egg as a meat alternative. For them, unfertilized eggs are no substitute for the real meat as they lack a meaty texture and flavour.

An egg is only a form of meat in the loose sense of the word, and the term was loosely used by Grace to suggest an inexpensive alternative to the white meat simple folks might want to consume as they await the resumption of fresh chicken supplies. Technically speaking, an egg is not considered meat for the simple reason a non-fertilized egg has never been alive. Meat is the part of animal flesh that’s consumed as food. As long as the egg doesn’t meet this criterion and there’s no animal inside the egg, it’s not characterized as meat. No animal means no meat.
