If Trump first started to seek deal of buying US shale oil, trade benefits could have gone to US instead of going to others.

IMO, he is not wrong. The American leaders are already cognizant that they're losing their competitive edge to China so even if it's not Trump, somebody will do it. Maybe they'll do it quietly instead of so loudly, but someone will do it. Even Biden is tackling China in another way.

The only real problem they have is that they started the trade war too late. They should have done it 10 years ago.

That's why I said they started this 10 years late. If they started this earlier then China would have to agree to every of their terms. Now the chances of success for the Americans are much diminished.
