Malaysia's Johor eyes Shenzhen-style hub with Singapore
#1

If approved, the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone would be nearly twice the size of China’s Shenzhen at 3,505 square kilometres.

Johor is also proposing 16 economic sectors as part of the zone, including electrical and electronics, manufacturing, healthcare and tourism, he said.

That includes the Johor Bahru city centre and Country Garden’s struggling US$100 billion megacity Forest City.

The result will not be the same as SZ hub.
With 2 different countries Geopolitical interest, Political differences, Demography, etc...

And most importantly, who to pours in the $ billions of investment for building the JB infrastructures?
Definitely not from Singapore, we are just too tiny without any resources.

I don't think the Johor side will make it if their government put bumis there. In the end it will drag Singapore down with the negative synergy.

But if they put jhks there....and by jhks I mean Han Malaysians, we will see job losses. Our low TFR is now boosted up by mainly jhks but when they can live and work in Johor, why would they come here?

JB will boom if KL federal government willing to pump $Billions investment into it.
Similarly to Beijing pumping in $Billions into SZ for decades.

It is all about investment $ rolling into the JB infrastructures. And not into politicians pockets.

However in the first place, the Malaysian government willing to invest $ billions into JB?
Or they still prefer to develop Selangor, etc.

Similarly to the new Capital of Indonesia, all foreign investors still waiting for $ to roll into the infrastructures before making the first move.

As for Singapore TFR, since long time ago, we already diversify foreign workers sources from other countries. China, India, Taiwan, HK, etc..

Of course the Malaysian is still the easiest choice but it will change once JB becoming more develop with higher salary. Currently it is about MYR 3K average salary.
But that is way below international standard. Inorder to retain the Malaysian workers, this salary needs to be double before we see results.
Once the salary rises to double, JB will become expensive too, for the cheapo foreign companies. So it is not a straightforward path for JB too.

If johorians are too demanding, they'll be replaced by plenty from other cities/towns. My friends' factories hire local managers at rm 5 to 6k, all very cheap, good and happy

MYR 6k is for all common workers, not managerial level.
Managerial level international salary lowest should be MYR 10k.

However you are right, many others Malaysian cities people can work in JB.
While many Johorian still travel to work in Singapore for international salary.

This phenomenon can work, if Malaysian government pumps in $ into JB.

If sg/jb cooperate, it's a win win for both.

Yes, but must be mutual benefits.
And be free of internal politicking episodes.

Once one side politicians insinuating unfair agreement to win votes. Even ghosts 👻 will run away overnight.
That's why over decades, only lukewarm reciprocation appears. More for PR purposes.

It's only likely to succeed if the zone is directly managed by SG. Otherwise, corruption and their bumi way of doing things will just take over.

SG is almost fully developed and not much room for GDP pump except all year round stupid infra building and road works.

Good to co develop JB nearer to SG. May consider buying an apartment there for future... Big Grin

No way. Johor is good for cheap day trip spendings for Singaporeans, but their track record has been disastrous for anything investment related.

Who knows what what will happen to Malaysian politics and policies in the next few years? And even if the current Aggong can exert federal influence to some extent currently, what's gonna happen once his tenure is up 4+ years later?

The road ahead for Singapore is rocky. This proposed shenzhen style economy hub will benefit Malaysia more. Singapore may regret. Worst case Singapore may shot herself in the foot.
