The statement was released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on Wednesday. While clearly tongue-in-cheek, it also reflects the serious tension that has built up between Ukraine and Hungary, with Budapest offering support for Moscow’s narratives over the war in Ukraine and obstructing the Western bodies’ efforts to bolster Kyiv.

Kyiv’s statement, which was also posted on X, was made in response to “[t]he latest manipulative statements from the leadership of Hungary regarding Ukraine’s decision not to extend the transit agreement with the aggressor state, Russia, from 2025 onwards”, it said.

Donald Trump has said that a meeting is being arranged between himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin. US president-elect gave no timeline for when the meeting might take place.

Russian news agency Tass quotes Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying that the US has not yet formally requested a meeting. Trump has promised to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine soon after he takes office on 20 January and has expressed scepticism about US military and financial support for Kyiv.

Kellogg set out his ideas for how the US could bring about an end to the war in a research paper published by the America First Policy Institute, a pro-Trump think thank, in April last year. 

He proposed that Ukraine should only get further US aid if it agreed to participate in peace talks with Moscow.

Ukraine's Legion in Poland has received 1,300 applications; first women join unit. Almost 1,300 Ukrainians living in Poland, Denmark, Czechia, Germany, Lithuania, and other European countries have applied to join Poland-based Ukrainian Legion, said on Jan. 10. The legion was unveiled in July 2024 as a volunteer military unit made up of Ukrainians living in Poland trained by Polish Armed Forces. The volunteer recruitment center was opened last October at Ukrainian consulate in the eastern Polish city of Lublin. The ministry announced on Jan. 10 that 2nd grp of volunteers had already signed contracts in Lublin. For first time, new recruits included women who applied for medical and communications roles.

"We accepted more recruits into unit's ranks than in November," said Lieutenant Colonel Petro Pokrusha, a representative legion's command "This shows growing confidence of our citizens in this initiative." After signing their contracts, new volunteers began training at Polish Armed Forces' facilities under Polish instructors and using modern NATO weaponry. Legion was launched as a way to engage Ukrainians living abroad in Ukraine's defense against Russia's invasion amid increasingly critical manpower shortages.

Legion will allow Ukrainians to join fight while being able to return to their place of residence abroad after completing their service. Under martial law instituted in 2022 after start of full-scale war, Ukrainian men aged 18-60 are not permitted to leave Ukraine without permission.

The U.N. estimates that 6.7 million Ukrainians were driven abroad as a result of Russia's all-out invasion. This is in addition to a sizeable diaspora living in Europe, the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere since before 2022.
