Quacquarelli Symonds ranking for As

Hong Kong’s oldest university has unseated the leading varsity in Singapore and reclaimed second place in an influential league table for Asia, while mainland China’s Peking University has held onto the top spot for the second year in a row.

A breakdown of the rankings from British firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) showed five of Hong Kong’s universities had gone up the list, three had fallen, one remained in the same place and another entered the charts."

Not shocking lar. Here the Gov pump in so much money for research and scholarships to so many FTrs. They think that money buys ranking and then boosts that the Uni has so much research funding and so many scholars. But all these are basically funds from the Gov. Sad case lar. Cheater bug

Just put ten 15 year- old students from HK and SG

and ask them to talk about Democracy, mRNA vaccine . . . .

HK students can easily surpass book worms

Why do we need 5 Mayors and 80 PAP Ministers?

Personally, I am never impressed with these so-called university rankings showing our local universities on top of the table despite myself being an alumnus to one of them.

If your university is really top of the table globally, you will automatically feel it as top private, public or academic organizations all over the world fall heels over head to entice you to join them. You will feel like an interviewer spoilt for choice.

Instead from my own personal experience and what I hear of NUS/NTU/SMU grads, we appear to be pretty normal in the sense that we apply and compete over openings across a wide spectrum of organizations in a normal fashion.

What I think our universities fare well is complementing themselves to the key metrices used to score rankings by various publishers and sort of game the system to an elevated ranking. However, the reality is potential employers are nowhere that impressed with our universities and hence the difference in reality when it comes to employment of our local uni grads and their supposed star power from the rankings.

For e.g. Tsinghua is supposedly 2nd place and NUS 3rd place so as a matter of technicality these two institutions' grads should be roughly on par, but I have heard of many top MNCs rushing to pitch their companies for Tsinghua Engineering / Science grads to join them but have never heard of the same preferential treatment accorded to NUS grads. Our NUS grads (even first class honors) simply go through the recruitment SOP of interviews and assessment tests in order to move from one round to another.
